I know we had this topic before, but now that Ram 1500 is going to have a diesel engine. What are the chances that toyota is going to jump in the wagon too?

Toyota will put a diesel in the Tundra way before the Tacoma I'd bet and they just released a new gen Tundra still with no diesel option so I doubt the Tacoma will be getting one anytime soon. Try asking again in 2025 when they are working on releasing the 4th gen Tacoma:rolleyes:

Oh look another thread about a diesel. If you search you'll find out they're not putting one out anytime soon. So you're just going to be hoping like the rest of us.

i wouldn't be so sure, if toyota put a i4 turbo diesel (or a I6) in a taco, and upgraded the suspension and frame, it could be a very good tow vehicle, what these companies need to realize is that you don't have to have a truck the size of a f-150 or f-250 to be a good tow vehicle.

Toyota would be foolish not to see this, plus diesels are very economic, put a i4 or i6 turbo diesel in a truck the size of a 2nd gen taco or 1st gen tundy and it would do better MPG then a 2.7 or 3.4 or 4.0 in either truck.

I just posted this in a thread regarding diesels in the first gen section.

I would 100% convert to a vw tdi if a legitimate kit was out.

Yeah, but I don't think the general public realizes that is the problem. When people want to tow something any bigger than what we are already towing with our Tacomas they instantly think full size truck if not full size diesel.

Sure it would be a good choice, but from what I understand it is pretty hard to get a diesel into the US and Toyota probably figures that the cost to get a diesel into the Tacoma is too high to justify doing it. Also the Tacoma is dominating the mid-size market and encroaching on the full size market. No reason to fix what ain't broke really.

I think people on here need to realize that Tacoma World really is a small market in the scheme of things. Just because this entire website wants a diesel in a Tacoma doesn't mean a diesel will sell well across the entire market. I would be surprised if TW members even made up 5% of the Tacoma Market. I know of 3 TW members in my entire town, yet I see on average 5+ different Tacomas a day. There have to be at least a few hundred in my town of about 90,000 people. Look how few Hawaii members you see on here, yet if you go there, I shit you not, like 50% of the traffic on the road is a Tacoma!

To make matters worse, out of all the people that say they would get a diesel, just how many of them really would? especially when that diesel likely carries a price tag anywhere from $3K-10K more than a gas one.

My whole point is there just isn't that strong of a market for a diesel in a midsize in the US and you mix that with the difficultly of getting a diesel into the US and it is just very unlikely. Plus just because diesels get better mileage people still don't like seeing the price per gallon being higher...

I agree, I definitely think its unlikely to see a diesel in a compact pick up in the states. I think swapping discussions would be a more productive waste of bandwidth, rather then countless threads on wondering, wishing, and guessing what Toyota will allow us.

We are already paying a premium for these Tacoma's as it is. I just don't see a lot of people willing to spend another $5K++ for a diesel option in these mid size trucks. They would have to get 30+ MPG and have a lot more power than the current 4.0L for me to be interested.

Tacoma's are a pretty light truck. You can have all the power in the world in one of these things but they will always be limited on how much they can tow/haul by their size.

Be careful what you wish for.... Hilux diesels are plauged by dirty fuel injectors and carbon deposit issues. Look at it!

But if it had a long bed and a diesel, think of the amazing quantity of poop it could haul.......
