From one runner to another, good job!

So far, turning around and yelling "SIT" at the top of my lungs has worked long enough to continue on my way. The dog kinda has a WTF? moment.

I am very familiar with my normal routes. I drive them regularly, as well as biking and running. I avoid known problem dogs. If I go somewhere I'm not familiar with, I do carry pepper spray. If I could legally carry a gun, I would. I can't see ever needing it, but that's not the point of carrying a gun, anyway.

Glad you took care of yourself and your wife, I know from experience both at work and in my leisure activities, A LOT of dog owners should not have dogs, and probably should not be allowed contact with the rest of us either.

Protecting yourself and your family is your right and responsibility. This comment disgusts me. You can let yourself get attacked And I'm sure you are also the kind that would sue afterwards. Don't get mad at someone for protecting themselves.

OP nice work. Sounds like you handled the situation like a pro. I carry a knife when I run. I do it because I am worried about someone else's dog attacking my german shepherd. I always leash my dog and she is a very trained runner. Anyways, Nobody or no living thing was hurt so nice work. And yes its always responsible to keep the pet on the leash. I can see this getting locked.

Sounds like you were really wanting to use your weapon. Glad you didn't. Maybe learn how to defend yourself from a dog without a firearm. The dog was barking and growling at you? Or was it trying to attack you and was lungeing at you?

Sounds like you over reacted and want to tell everyone about how you almost used your gun.

Then again, I wasn't there, I don't know the situation very well.

No different with gun control laws.

The problem is not the dogs, the breed, or 99% of the owners.
But because a few idiots can't responsibly own guns or animals, they fuck it up for everyone.

My buddy grew up with a pit. Dog was crazy, but would never hurt another human being unless they moved to harm a family member.
My introduction to the dog when I was 9 was "she's cool"

Arizona does not require a permit for CC.
He was in violation of the Federal gun free school zone only in that he was within 1000ft of a school (unless the park was ON school property)... but that is a federal crime and not likely to be charged in Phoenix. The USDA would have to bring the charges... and they have better things to do.

Maybe I went overboard with emotion at first. I apologize. I won't go back and edit my post.

I agree with protecting your family, however in this instance, to me, it seemed overly aggressive. That being said, I wasn't there, I am a dog owner, and I do not own a gun.

I reread the original post and can see that he is struggling with what happened and whether or not he made the right move. All that I can say is I'm glad nothing happened and perhaps this will cause more people to think twice if the same instance were to arise.

 Makes more sense. I have to agree the whole time I was reading the OP I was hoping he didn't have to shoot the dog. Glad he didn't.

The courts have supported that private property is exempted.
California is a bit stickier in that they require the private property to be "not accessible to the public"... IE, an un-fenced/gated front yard would not be legal, but the fenced back yard would be.

You have the right to defend yourself no matter what. You handled the situation the way any responsible gun owner would have.

Stand up reply. I agree, maybe it was a bit much having a loaded piece. Bet that owner keeps his dog on the leash from now on.

Why is everyone questioning the op situation as to defending himself? There are so many dog maulings these days and I wish I could carry just in case,Bunch of democrats in here trying to say something about the right to carry in this country. If its between me getting hurt or the dog its not going to be me.
