I currently have an Kenwood DNX6160 that I'm replacing with a Pioneer avic z1. Both head units have their own special cable to connect an iPod(not just a regular USB plug). As far as I know, there's no way to play an ipod and iphone 5 without taking out the unit and switching cables. I was wondering if there's an adaptor that would work or if there is any way I could mod the cable to wire in a female USB port so I could just plug in a different USB cable for each one. I know that Apple makes an adaptor that will charge but I've been getting mixed reviews as to whether or not it will play music and let me be able to control from the head unit. Anyone have any experience with a working mod or adaptor? Thanks!

As you know, if you go with the AVIC-Z1 you have to get this to be able to play music from an iPod or any iPhone other than the iPhone 5. If you want to be able to play music from the iPhone 5, you have to get this adapter. It will definitely work with all the music on your iPhone 5. However, It WILL NOT transfer video. So if you want to stream Netflix or YouTube through your iPhone 5 to you fancy new Pioneer, you will not be able to watch it on your Pioneer.

Thanks! I have the pioneer iPod adaptor so I'm good there. I wasn't sure about the apple lightning-to-30 pin adaptor because I've seen mixed reviews, maybe that was moreso about the generic versions. I know none of them do video (yet), but I have a reg cab and no kids so I'm not too worried about that. Thanks a ton!

    I had an afterthought....

I'm not sure why you're choosing to go with the Z1, but Pioneer has other navigation decks that have AppRadio mode that the Z1 doesn't have. If you don't know what AppRadio mode is, look it up. It basically will run certain iPhone and Android apps on the screen of the Pioneer deck. The cheapest one with AppRadio Mode is currently $300 on Crutchfield and the most expensive one is $1200. So if you're getting the Z1 for somewhere in that price range, I'd recommend checking out the newer Pioneer decks.

Haha. Sorry man. I meant to say that the Z1 is the best deck ever made and nothing will ever be nearly as good!

    I owned a Z1 before which I updated to a 5400rpm drive, a Z3, a Z3 and later maps, etc.

I will say I did enjoy the navigation interface on the Z1-Z3 series.
the iPod music interface is complete crap. I wouldn't even imagine using it now. No way.
Also the Bluetooth voice telephone system is crap. The background noise and echo is just junk.

I later upgraded to an AVIC-Z140BH which I will say the Pandora interface was dang nice. The iPod/iPhone music interface was solid too. I did not like the navigation software they use as much as the 6 years older Z1-Z3.
The bluetooth telephone was solid. So clear and no echo, people barely knew I was in my car.

The AVIC-Z140BH came with AppRadio features in it. I was not impressed. nope, not at all.

However, I did watch videos of the stand-alone unit AppRadio3 for this year that was just announced and the real world videos looked great. I am going to look at this in person before I entertain buying one for my Tacoma.

    Just MY $0.02

Did you buy the Z140 yet? If you haven't, talk to me before you do. I might have found a good deal on one.

Don't be too upset. The one I found was on Amazon and it was a customer return. The price was about the same as ebay prices.
