You're probably right. I offered to send him bank info so he could transfer that way and I could see the funds before sending. No response in a while so I think that about sums it up.

I had a bad experience trying to find a roommate years ago when I thought I would have known a scam. I used roomster.com to find a roommate. He said he would send me a check for $3000 and to take out money for rent and send him the rest. I thought I could spot a scam a mile away. Boy was I wrong. I wired the money to him, got a call from my girlfriend right after. Her dad said it was a scam. Called Western Union and canceled the wire before the guy could get the money. I was only out the wire fee. A couple of weeks later that $3000 cashiers check had reversed and the bank told me it was fraudulent. Before that time I thought Cashiers checks were all legit. Now I know differently.

Fraud Paypal account. Probably fraudulent credit card information used to pay through the guest portal of Paypal. If it's too good to be true, it definitely is.

One of my friends almost lost a good bunch on a scam, she applied to a babysitting gig by a couple moving here from Florida, they sent her a 3000$ check for babysitting ahead of time (husbands was deaf, and wife was a surgeon) and then claimed one of their fathers died and needed 2,000$ of it back, and she could of kept the rest in good faith. She was going to refund it until her husband told her she was an idiot and wait 2 weeks for the money to clear. Sure as shit, it was fake

    These are so common.

Another favorite is the house for rent scam. They take an actual live MLS listing for a rental home and create a fake ad for it, pricing it way below what it should be. They claim they are traveling on some mission in Africa or England or some BS location, and to just send one month's deposit and they'll send the keys. They tell you to drive by and look in the windows and everything. All done through emails of course.

I've done ecom for 14 years and I've seen it all. I would get unusual orders, and the first thing I would check would be their IP address that I captured in the cart. Almost always it was in Ghana or Nigeria or South America but they wanted delivery in Kansas. What they would do is steal someone's credit card and address info for someone in Kansas (or wherever) and place an order under the person's name but a fake email address. Everything passes all the fraud checks because it is a legit card, but as soon as they get the tracking number emailed to them, they are in control.

Did you know that if you possess a tracking number for a package still in transit, you can change the destination address as long as it still has to go through a sort station or hub? So these guys would try to order something to be delivered to the victim's house, and would take the tracking number and call UPS/FedEX and change delivery to some motel address or drop house. Product gets delivered, they bail, and the real credit card holder figures it out days or weeks later when they get their statement.

Meanwhile the crooks have probably collected hundreds of deliveries to the drop location and are long gone.

When i was looking for a rental last year. Someone tried this on me. Said oh dont worry about the for sale signs in the window we are taking it off the market. And we are in nigeria on a church mission helping people and god bless etc. Pisses me off they try to bring god and religion in on it to make you think they are up standing people. But you can usually tell. To good to be true.
