All I was saying is that a knock or a ping is pre-detonation which is computer controlled and that I have not ever seen that in my truck.

I vacuum leak might (or might not) cause those symptoms too.

A knock is a knock is a knock. A ping is a ping is a ping. If there is something rattling that sounds metallic its neither a ping or a knock.

Yeah, I remember SLC traffic from last year, is horrible. I-5 from Everett to Tacoma is pretty much the same. Fortunately, I do not have to drive the freeways here, certainly not on a M-F workday.

Do you know how many miles on on the spark plugs?

With time and miles, the electrode gap will widen making it more and more dificult for the arc to cross that gap. It may in fact be a missfire that sounds like a ping. This happens only under load too.

Derped hard on trifecta today...backed into joe bumper and dented the tailgate and a bottle of water slipped out of my hands and cracked the windshield. Only damage...fuck me

 

Windshields actually break pretty easily from the inside... water bottle must have been hauling ass still though. Haha nice one Mark!...

My grandpas 83 chevy with a 5.0 in it would start pinging if you were in 4th gear (that was top gear on the manual tranny, not sure if it was 1:1 or an over drive though) and towing up a hill, even a light load like 2 4wheelers. He forewarned me that it would and told me to just downshift and it would go away.

My understanding of the computer is it should throw a code long before you hear any pre-detetonation unless you have it really bad all at once maybe. When the computer detects it it will adjust the fuel trims once and if it detects it still it will adjust again and so on. After so many adjustments it throws a code, something like 15+ adjustments depending on the vehicle.
