I saw that a couple posts ago and kinda thought the same. Just figured I'd post anyway so he'll see it next time he's online...and oilfields in Alaska?! Why not come to the Bakken, its alot closer to home and way busier I'm sure!

First question is how do you have the relays wired? Does the switch switch power or ground to the relay??

I'd also check all of the connections at the relay. Sounds like something is getting arced or similar.

If you don't have it wired with the ground getting switched on and off I'd try reworking it like that first. If problem still exists then I'd try another relay.

Yea but they won't pay me like they do up here for only 2 months. Haha

 

Its a four way relay so it goes switch to relay, relay to ground, power to relay, and relay to lights. I noticed there was corrosion in both relays when I first took them apart so I cleaned them as best I could and sprayed some battery terminal protector in them. Still have the problem. I noticed that if I play with them (wiggle, unplug partially, etc.) The lights go on and off sporadically, leading me to believe there is something arcing across in there.

 

I had a relay go bad and that is exactly what it did. The lights came on by themselves and stayed on. I ended up just unplugging the lights and then changing the relay and they went back to working normal again. So try changing the relay, it's probably starting to short out.

 

Awesome, that was kind of my theory, just figured I would consult someone who knows electrical stuff. Relays are kinda new to me.

 

Yea sounds like a bad relay. You can pop the cover off too and look at it if your really worried. But I'd just slap a new one in. They are cheap enough.

If that doesn't fix it let me know and draw a diagram of it as best you can.

Shop bitch work.

Cleaned shop ran parts and swapped out a factor radiator today. Was a bitch!! But it's fun I guess. Just wrenching usually. just wish it was in my truck...haha

 

What kind of vehicles do they have? Radiator?

 

Yea you know...radiators?? Haha the big cooling part of your truck that sits I front of the fan?

Imagine one twice as tall and 1.5x as wide and 3x as thick. That's what I'm dealing ing with haha


And just big ass trucks and normal 1ton trucks. And huge diesel generators in the trailers. One yesterday was twin turboed with turbos the size of my head and V12 haha they big tanks and pumps and stuff.

Yes. Think this one said on the Cummings diesel it was 600hp and 1850ft/lb torque. Trails they haul are huge sometimes. Bigger then anything I've ever seen. It's pretty impressive really.

The one in the shop now has a HUGE turbo. If it's still there in the morning I snap a pic if that. Night crew might get it done.
