CSI LOL. Some1 might had already posted, but I got tired looking through the pages. In any case you were 100% correct in that scenario. There is a "dog at large", city code for dogs off leash, in Phoenix. Getting rabies shots for yourself over a 6month period plus is not fun.

Why would you go running with a gun any way? What if it fell on the ground and the impact caused it to go full auto and it killed a school worth of kids? So irresponsible.

    All very true.

Your philosophy on carrying and mine differ. If I draw, it's because I am firing. That's the way I was trained, though. For me, the weapon is holstered unless it is absolutely needed. I can give verbal commands without holding a firearm.

For me, this does 2 things: 1.) It makes me use my brain to diffuse, eliminate, escape potential situations instead of relying on hardware (99% of the time a situation does not require lethal action or brandishing) 2.) If I DO have to draw, I am confident that I have exhausted all other avenues of resolving the situation and am justified in the resulting action.

Obviously - certain situations like joining an engagement in progress, breaching, cover, etc., require me to have my weapon at the ready, but I'm talking about civilian interactions here.

There is just one part of your original post that doesn't sit well with me, and it's literally the only thing I take exception with in your thought/action process:

It seems to me that in this sequence you had the situation assessed and mentally chose the gun-aided encounter route. Now, this is a LOT of Monday-morning quarterbacking, but instead of choosing to unhook your weapon and continue charging into the threat -- locking eyes and engaging the animal's chase instinct -- you could have chosen to slow your run, assume a defensive/dismissive posture/position, close the gap between your wife (backup) and yourself and offer the verbal commands then.

Of course, there is no way for me to tell how quickly this assessment and the animal being on you occurred, but that's the only exception I take with your process. I know you were in the right and the owner should have had control of the animal, and that you should not have to alter your run because of them. It just comes across like you chose engagement over diffusion is all.

As stated before, I'm glad everything worked out okay and that no beings were hurt. This is a good exercise for people to think about what they would do in similar situations and I appreciate you sharing.

What if the dog owner had a gun? Dead dog and a shot out the media would love that.

Running with a gun is dangerous even if holstered. Since you encountered a similar
experience before then I would find a better alternative, like pepper spray or find somewhere else to run.
Everyone knows your not supposed to keep running when you see a dog, you stop.
Pulling your pistol and cussing at the owner is not the answer either, what if he had a gun
too! Besides you don't draw you weapon unless your life is threatened. If the dog had attacked you I would agree.
From what I gathered from you statement tells me; hey I have a gun and I have the right of way, if that dog bites me I'll shoot it! WRONG....
Should have been; Hey I see a dog, I'll back off, so I don't make him anxious and provoke an attack. just saying...

I can agree with you. I would say this is where my conflict with my self is, if that makes any scene. Prepping my self to use my weapon. It does seem like (Well I have this here with me. This is the option I have might as well use it).

I can say from the time I saw the couple saw the dog and it saw me to the time it barked was about 2 maybe 3 seconds. The next second the dog was on my heal and I was drawing. I did not have time to stop or turn around. I know that sounds stupid to say that I had time to ready my self and draw a gun, when it would take the same amount of time to stop running. But it didn't. I dont think I can exsplain it any better.

Yeah, I imagine it happened pretty quickly.

Like I said, I'm doing a lot of Monday-morning QB-ing here. It's easy to be an after-the-fact analyst.
