If you've got the $$$, stick with Warn or Super. Shittybilt has a limited number of pulls in it.

Speaking of synthetics, I have masterpull and it's great but I recently bought some of the 3/8" "tuff stuff" synthetic off eBay for my dads truck and for $160 bucks I gotta say I was really impressed, very nice rope.

 

Takes some real weight off the front. If it snaps, it just falls to the ground and you can fix it right there on the spot. No metal splinters for the dumbasses who forget their leather gloves. Plus if it's mounted in one of your bumpers, it takes away all the stupid discussions on UV damaging the rope.

 

I went with Warn for my trucks because Warn was suggested by a few wrecker operators that I know. Rollbacks almost always use a worm gear winch, which is slow, heavy, and built for constant use. Ramsey makes awesome worm winches, which is what a couple of my buddies have on their wreckers, but they still recommended Warn for recreational use on a pick 'em up

 

If you have a harbor freight get there's buy a synthetic rope shove it in a winch bumper and put a warn sticker on your truck!! You'll be stoked and no one will know that you saved enuf to pay for half of your arb bumper!!

Pros and cons for everything out there. Warn hogs power and can slow and weaken pull without throttling or extra power.
I've heard of synthetic breaking out of nowhere with barely any tension. When they break they drop. This is good.
I've broke steel with little to no snap back. Yes it splinters and yes I've torn up my hand, multiple times. Gloves, good gloves, are essential.

I found some of the mile marker 8000's for $274 shipped a while back so I bought one. My buddy has one on his pos chevy and uses it every time he gets in the truck never had a problem. If you are going to be using it everyday I would go with the warn (an 8274 if you can fit it) but as for me the mile marker was too good of a price to pass up. You have to be careful when ordering the 8000lb mile markers though they make two versions one with a smaller motor one with a more powerful one you don't want the smaller motor. Mine is an sec8000 so far it has worked just fine every time I needed it.

 

Not stirring anything but I have seen a super fall apart on a free spool. Maybe it was incorrectly put together. Not sure.

 

I have a Recon, 10,500lb, comes with synthetic line, waterproof, wired and remote control, $450 shipped for a brand new one.

I've used it about 20 times, once totally under water. Works great!

 

Forgot about Mile Marker and Ramsey. You should add both of them to your poll. If you do go synth, go quality. I've never heard of a good synthetic cable breaking for no reason. Personally, Warn is the only winch I'd ever run. However, I don't own stock in the company and have wheeled with folk who've been served well by Super, Mile Marker and Ramsey.

A little off topic, but are there any concerns with Tacos and winch size? Jeeps are recommended at 8000 to 9500. Stronger winches are discouraged due to them tweaking the frame in the wrong situation. Any concerns with the frame strength of the Taco and say a 10.5 or larger winch?

 

Most I've seen have been 9500. I think I've seen a 10000 once on a taco. Mostly because the bumpers and size of the truck don't allow the necessary space for much bigger than 8000.

The winch itself fit fine. Just needed to remotely mount the Solenoid.

I had warn on two rovers and a Jeep, and my dad has had them on about 10 different vehicles. In my mind, if you are doing serious enough work or wheeling to need winch, it is worth the extra couple of hundred dollars to get one that is proven and reliable. Warn may not be the coolest, sexiest thing around, but at the end of the day, it's rugged and reliable, and will work in bad situations, which is where you need it most. If a winch is the only thing that keeps me from walking out of a bad mud hole or waiting hours to call for help, then that backstop alone is worth a little extra to get something that I don't have to second guess. I have not used any of the other aforementioned manufacturers, and while I am sure they make great products, you can't go wrong with Warn.
