Engage 4wd on pavement if you are going straight, otherwise do it on dirt, gravel, etc.

I'm still working out what amount of space-time continuum curvature would be needed to blow the transfer case all to hell while driving on asphalt in a straight line.

 

Definitely possible. I had mine up to 80 kph up a rocky mountain road. When I finally stopped I realized that I was in lo. So that's why I had some outrageous pick up. Is my first thought.

 

My guess is that the diameter of all four of your tires are exactly the same. And there are no other infinitesimal differences in air pressure or weight differential placed on your tires to affect the overall diameter. With that being said , you can drive in a straight line for 10 +/- miles in 4WD and be fine, OK I'll give that to you. But is it not a given that there are variables in manufacturing and those variables will contribute to drivetrain bind? Torque loads break things like output shafts, U-joints and CV's. Differences in diameter from front to rear in a 4WD system like our Tacoma's (and many other manufacturers 4WD systems lacking a center differential) lead to torque loads that are completely capable of doing real world damage to drivelines.

 

Straight line is fine for reasonable distances, turning in 4x4 on pavement you run the risk of fucking up.

 

No ones debating that you lose some turn radius, only that your gearbox will explode if you drive on dry pavement in 4wd. I don't think you need to be afraid of your 4WD system. Respect it? Yeah, absolutely. The truck is pretty good about letting you know what the limits are. If it starts to bind, straighten it out a bit because you're stressing components.

 

Your gonna tell me when you off road you magically don't have Any binding. I think that, yes there is the potential for different binding and pressure points when driving in 4x on pavement. But I do not think it will destroy your vehicle. I bet you'd wear a set of tires off your truck before suffering any catastrophic failure.

 

But isn't it also a given that tires are squishy and don't have an infinite coefficient of friction that while rolling allow some slippage between the front and rear?

The last time anyone had a little fun and wailed on the gas to peel out, did the diff, driveshaft, transfer case or transmission 'splode or did the tires squeal and burn a little rubber?

I grant that there will be more wear since parts will be under load but I have never, in my 2 decades of off-roading, experienced a drivetrain binding up to the point that parts broke while driving in 4WD, on asphalt, in a straight line, in excess of 10 miles.

 

Why do you think it will blow the transfer case and not a u joint or cv or any thing for that matter? You been looking at that New Process transfer case picture some one posted? Trust me there are people out there right now that don't even know their 4X4 is engaged and has been for the last 3 weeks.

Physics mang. No infinite coefficient exists, only finite possibilities. Jones and Childers reports on coefficients of friction reflect to average approximately 0.7 for dry roads. On dry surfaces you might get as high as 0.9 as a coefficient of friction. In the posed situation, it would likely not to any substantial harm to a 4WD system. But damage is possible.

I have owned to yotas with over 200 k that I have driven around like this with no 4wd problems at all
