I have to put my .02 cents in. I walk dogs for a living. That dog smelt your fear the minute you cleared the bush and he saw you. The owners were totally wrong by having the dog off leash, regardless if it's trained or not. That is the law correct??
I come upon agressive dogs all the time, I don't carry a gun or pepper spray. 3 times I have had a dog run up on me, given the owners fair warning, and as soon as that dog made it's move, it would be on the ground struggling for breath. Kicked 2 of them in the throat and punched 1. I am a firm believer in the old saying, don't draw the gun, don't point the gun, unless your using the gun.
I'd look at it like this. Say you have to draw again, maybe your not fast enough, you get it out, you go to fire, and the dog gets your arm, the gun discharges, where will that bullet go????
I always stand my ground, and I will look them in the eye, because I want them to know, I'm not the 1 who is going to get hurt. Pepper spray is the safest and smartest, for everyone.

Well I'm in wheelchair and I own dogs. I do get out alot and go about my business as most people do except I use a wheelchair. I have met dogs that were good had no problem with my wheelchair then I have met some that want to eat my ass up for pushing my chair. I have my CHL and carry all the time. Before I had my CHL I carried a big ass knife. I had a dog come at me and reached and grabbed my leg and was shaking the shit out of me. Almost drug me out of my chair. So I gutted his ass. I ain't gonna be dead by no animal. I have the right to protect me and my family from violence and if I had a gun I would have blown his ass away no problem I don't care who's dog it was. If it is attacking for no reason (unprovoked) and is eating your ass up it is gonna die of lead poison.

Seriously, there are all kinds of holsters and all kinds of not so smart
people just waiting to have an accident. Not saying this is the case here
but anyone who carries for a while or handles guns enough will sooner
or later make some sort of mistake and will ask themselves; did I just do that?

Why stop at a dog? Make it a person. Say you are running along minding your own business, rocking out to some foreigner when the douch walking towards you shows his hypothetical teeth and starts running at you. Do you not have the right to stand your ground? Do you not have the right to feel safe in exact place you are in? In a sense this marks the beginning of a robbery. The laws in Arizona are written in such a way to allow the OP to do exactly what he did...hell, he could have shot the dog...multiple times and been completely in the right. If he felt a legitimate, and articulate-able threat to his or his wifes personal safety. Some of you may think the "sheep, sheep dog" theory is all hog wash designed to only sell books and pump up those that walk into harms way on a daily. I'm here to say, it is not. It is a way of life, a mindset. I know for a certainty that criminals prey on fear, just as the dog in the OP preyed on his fear. If you are one that would alter your route, or not hold a gaze, you seriously need to think long and hard about whether that pea shooter would be better left at the house to hold down the fort. Some moot might come along and challenge your gaze, or space. When you hesitate, odds are they are gonna take it from you and waste your ammo, not theirs. Why carry the thing then? So you can "be cool" and tell people you carry? Just saying.

Pit bulls are the best dog's ever. Dog ownership is a matter of personal responsibility and for you to claim that Pit Bull owner's are nuts mirror's an anti-gun nut's statements regarding "assault weapons". Are some Pit Bull owner's irresponsible and should not be allowed to own one? You betcha. Are some gun owner's irresponsible and should not be allowed to own one? Definitely. What it boils down to is the responsibility of the owner not the dog or the firearm. Hell, Pomeranian's have killed people perhaps we should just ban all dogs?

Completely wrong. My guns can't accidentally get out of my safe. They don't have a mind of their own and can't harm someone. They are a tool like a knife, a bat, a car, poison etc. that have no intentions or desires, instincts or violent tendencies of their own. They can ONLY do what the person wielding them wants them to.

Yes, irresponsible owners can be a problem with both, but a responsible pit bull owner who takes reasonable safeguards like leashes and locked gates can be foiled by a dog slipping a collar or even attacking their owner or kid that comes into the yard looking for a lost ball. They are NOT the same.

There is a pitbull you should meet down the road from me. He will make you wish you were armed if you aren't. At the same time there are Staffordshire's (commonly people who own pits say that's what their dog is to avoid the PITBULL!!! reaction most people have.) that wouldn't hurt a fly. I grew up with dogs, both pure pets like labs and golden retrievers, beagles(currently) and have had some great English setters for hunting.

Not all pitbulls are capable of doing these things, but some are. The fault is unquestionably on the owners and the breeders who made them what they are. Go down to the animal shelters and look at the faces of some of those pits. It's like being in a prison, where they just look like they are trying to figure out how to get to your throat.

So then we should just ban all forms of animal ownership correct? Seeing as how any animal has a mind of it's own and the capacity to kill a human being... The only point I am trying to make is let's not descend the rabbit hole calling into to question one particular breed or one particular firearm. There are a multitude of factors that go into why animals are aggressive and to blame it on breed is ludicrous.

I gotcha. :) I was trying to say that coconuts kill more people than great white sharks, but no one is afraid of a coconut because that's a random event and a shark attack is not.

BTW, You aren't the only one driving a Tacoma, living in the OC who is from Georgia. Small world!

Edit: I see you edited your post. Maybe you aren't for Georgia. lol
