AC outlet in the bed

what type of output comes from this outlet and what type of tings should be connected to it. shoudl th truck be running or will it work while off? what would be overloaidng it?

 

From what I've read, it sucks. I think it's around 400w. Not sure of the load you can put on it, but I think a small TV might overload it.

You will probably want to run the engine while using it, otherwise your battery will die.

 

Yeah, tell me about it. I was sitting in my Taco listening to the radio for about an hour and ran the battery completely dead.

 

It will not work without the engine running. It's at full power (400w) when the engine is running and in park or neutral for standards. It's at 100w when shifted out of park or the clutch is depressed.

when i bought mine last thursday, no manual, stealership had to order it for me, sorry if its a dumb question but like to knwo real world results, who has used for what adn what worked and what didn't. stealerships and corporate info is only so much honesty in the real world.

 

So far, the only thing I've used it for is to charge a cell phone and a camera battery.

I used mine to run a power drill, grinder, recharge a laptop, work lights, air mattress pump, recharge a black and decker air compressor uhhhh probably some other stuff. It was actually one of the reasons I went with a TRD over an SR5. I got so used to having it it would have been a huge inconvenience not having it around. Not to mention its a pretty minor mod to splice into the wires and run a grounded outlet out of your center console.

Oh and don't worry about overloading it to much. It's got a safety cut off to prevent you from frying the circuit. Just to push the button again to reset it. We tripped the cut off a lot using the grinder but it was able to cut through a bud built skid plate with some patience.

 

ive only tryed using it one so far, with a hairdryer...it wouldn't work at all, it would turn off as soon as i tryed to turn in on.

 

If you check most electrical appliances they say how much current they draw. For example even a small coffee maker takes 650w. But it's definitely worth it when you're at 12000ft without an electric light in sight and you can inflate an air mattress without passing out

 

I know it doesn't work with a shop-vac WTF is it good forA hair dryer????

 

I used a small vaccum and an air compressor. So far no issues with that.

 

Wouldn't run my 6gal shopvac or handheld electric drill.

Did run a cellphone charger.

 

Sounds fairly pansy. I honestly was expecting more. I'll admit I haven't done the math to see what most things use in terms of watts but from what I hear there isn't much that does work.

 

I was able to run a small tv and the directv DVR. When the power went out, I was the only person on my street watching infomercials at 3am.

 

A small hairdryer is 1200 watts (the girlfriend's is 1500watts), so ya, no kidding it wouldn't work. 120 volts at 15 amps (standard North American breaker rating) is 1800 watts. so a hairdryer already pushes the limit of household current...

That said, I've plugged the computer, external hard drive, work light, coffee grinder (I'm an addict, gotta have my fresh ground beans even in the middle of nowhere), and various battery chargers into it. I find I use it more since I did the little mod to put an outlet into the centre console. For an outlet rated at 400 watts putting out 120vac it can pull 3.33 amps.
Anything higher could blow a fuse or damage the item. Ohm's Law.

i plugged my phone into that for about 20 min while i was driving and the car smelt like something was burning..it was the first time and the last time ive used it

 

I used my G/F's hair dryer with it, to heat the old TRD offroad decals to make way for some of Sockmonkey's TRD expedition ones....

It worked fine- it did'nt work at full potential but worked enough to heat em so as to make em easier to pull off.

 

charges batteries pretty well, i've charged my cell, camera, i-pod, and batteries for my power tools...oh yeah, it's perfect for soldering, especially because you have the tailgate for a workbench.

i have a small 5 gal shop vac that it'll run, but it usually takes 2 or 3 trys to get it to stay on.

 

I ahve charged my cell phone, and I ran a blender for some mixed drinks. It worked good, no complaints here.
