Just a basic question...I want to upgrade my door speakers but don't really want to drop the extra coin (really tight budget :/ ) on a set of components for the fronts, so I was curious if I could run some 3-way 6.5s up front and just disconnect the factory tweeters. Would it sound terrible having the tweeters with the speakers? Would I still be able to wire the 3-ways up with a wiring harness such as...

    I'm thinking something like this...

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Pioneer....p?skuId=7456227&id=1218846429341#tab=reviews

    With this compact amp...

    http://www.crutchfield.com/p_020XC1410/Clarion-XC1410.html

And some standard 6.5 coaxs in the rear doors.

Or would I be better off keeping the stock tweeters and doing 6.5 coax's all around?

    Appreciate the input!

    Too many to list now.
I'm not sure about the wiring questions but I know that moving to a coaxial speaker from a component is generally considered a downgrade. If it were me? I'd spend your tight budget elsewhere or save it until you can get something you'll really be happy with. I got lucky and won a 3,000 dollar system in my truck so I didn't have a middle ground haha. Went straight from stock to 110 decibels at no cost.

Wow that had to be nice. Specs on your $3k system? Good advice as well.

Don't get three ways, worst invention ever.

Coaxials work, if you get a good set, but ultimately just spend the money and get a component system.

People always told me, spend the money on the good stuff first, otherwise you're just throwing money away as you upgrade. I tried what you are asking, and ultimately ended up going with some high end stuff.

I "downgraded". I went from Type R comps to Massive VK6 comps to finally Boston coaxials. Both the Alpine and Massive components were too bright for me, even with EQing.

To me, the stock tweeter location is terrible, imaging is not good. I mounted my tweeters on the kick panels, which made imaging much better. I found that even mounting tweeters in the kicks, I preferred off axis aiming. So for my ears, coaxials made more sense - where mid bass and tweeter could be kept on the same alignment. The Bostons are the cheapest of the bunch I've tried, but to me sounds the best. It is the warmest sounding of the three and imaging is surprisingly good.

Components offer much more flexibililty, but coaxials "can" sound good - my doors are deadened and the speakers are amped. I don't know about 3 ways though.

That is quite the interesting opinion of speaker location. That must take out all of the depth from the listeners perspective and bring it out from infront of them and jam it down near their feet. Was that what you were aiming for? :notsure:

So you just disconnected the tweeters all together and are just running coaxials up front?

Not at all, imaging is right up near the dash. Tweeter dispersion of the Bostons are quite good. I will say that the components offered better imaging, and I was able to bring the center a little above dash (and near center) when the tweeters were in the kicks. When in the stock location, all sound was heavily biased towards driver. I even tried time alignment, which made everything worse.

Yes, I still have the VK6 tweeters mounted, just not hooked up.

Very interesting. I would like to listen to that. Too bad you are in Hawaii.
