    So I got my bed rack all built and realized my bracing for mounting the tent is too narrow. Anyone mount their tent with the rails going the short way on the tent? Do the mounting holes create a square so that the width between the rails is the same either way?

    crap bolted and welded together....

    You can do that, you just have to cut the rails per the directions supplied. If you lay them the way your describing, measure the distance between them. See if they will fit on your rack, If not....well time for some redesign on your rack.

    It's not mounted 20' in the air, but I do plan on getting a different rack setup... This is sometime temp ATM, the parking area that I used wasn't flat.
