I have to comment here. With all of the years I have worked on the Silverado I have only TWICE ever had to replace a transfer case. Once was because the driver hand-grenaded it while off-roading. I have HEARD of the transfer case issue, but never once actually saw a failure as a result of this. I think Jim should be just fine with his new Silverado. The biggest issues I have seen with these trucks over the years is the need to keep the throttle body clean, and the occasional EVAP emission codes that did plague many of those years, but usually got fixed while under warranty.

Haha I researched the shit out of it, like I do with everything... I'm actually pretty comfortable with the idea of a killllllverado. (http://www.dontevenreply.com/view.php?post=94) Although I bet in a few years I end up jumping up to that 5.0L in the f-150, once they're older, more used, and have more bugs worked out.

Bill, you posted that at the exact same time. Thanks man, I appreciate it! Well, I think it's worth the 75 bucks for the kit for insurance, yeah?

Just wanted to pop in and say Hi. I recently purchased my first tacoma. A 99 prerunner w/ 135K. It runs great after a little masaging. I also have an 88 5 lug w/ 208K and have owned an 07 tundra 4x4. I'm from montgomery. Good thread, although I must admit I haven't read the whole thing. lol

I would think so, yes. Better to take care of a potential problem BEFORE it becomes a problem.

You were one of the lucky ones. I change those Triton spark plugs out a lot and they SUCK. On average I get at least one that breaks. One truck I did several weeks ago had 6 of 8 break off. I always tell those customers that the estimate includes expecting every plug to break, and then I reduce the cost for each one that doesn't break. Works out better that way so that the customers never get surprised. They HATE surprises.

I had a plug break on a mustang w/the same heads. Took me 4 hours to get it out. And they where a lot easier to get to than an F-150. As far as the silverado keep about 1500 in the bank at all times for a transmission rebuild. Because it will need it...sooner or later.

^^^ agreed. My uncle has an 06 or 07 with less than 75k and has already rebuilt the transmission

This is so hilarious. So many bad talks about different trucks. I have seen plenty of Chevys go 200k without the transmission being touched. But a few people have had it happen and that means they all must be junk. lmao.

    ^^This.

I could list bad problems with pretty much any make/model. Transmission problems are common with many makes/models, because it seems nobody is smart enough to properly service them. Most people don't realize there is a filter in there (on many models) that needs to be changed, and a transmission flush, is just drain the fluid and refill.

Would you change your oil without changing the filter? It seems the common man or woman would, because they don't know any better.

Nothing wrong with stating your opinion based on your experience, we are all doing that here. I had a chevy that had a common issue happen to it, but just worked on a ford where the common issue didn't happen. Every one is entitled to their opinion and it's hard not to have one when you have been screwed over monetarily by something.

and again, we are back to this fact.

Well, at the end of the day, I'm rolling the dice on something it looks like, it's pick my poison. So I'm going to go for the 5.3, because at least I'll get better mileage out of the deal even if the 5.4 tows a bit better.

I wasn't saying anything about it being a POS. You shouldn't HAVE to service the transmission with less than 50k on it, not towing anything, normal every day driving. I think it had around 50k on it when it was rebuilt.... To be completely honest, Alex's transmission, to my knowledge, hasnt ever had the fluid changed or filter changed with over 236k miles on it.

It depends on the vehicle. It was not that long ago that most manufacturers recommended servicing your transmission every 15k miles. Eventually that increased to 30k, then 60k, and now if you actually look at the DETAILS in the service recommendations, you should service them every 100k miles in most cases, but some are still every 60k.

That's the last thing I'm worried about right now. I gotta get the wheel bearing fixed, bushings for the rack and pinion, then I will do the transmission. I am going to go with synthetic because of the mileage and not sure if its ever been done! Lol

I say just park it... but that is just my vote. you have a car that will get you from point a to b.... you dont HAVE to have a truck, you have said yourself. otherwise you are gonna end up with a totally new truck by the time you get done replacing things.... seems we have heard you tell this story before...:notsure:

hey fellers, different subject at hand!

I've got an older stihl fs55 trimmer that I'm rebuilding the carb on. Gaskets still look good, as if they were rebuilt in the last year or so. After cleaning it, think I'll be ok to just re-use them? I don't have much 2-cycle experience.
