I think Toyota forgot what a turbo was after they quit making the Supra. They need to turbo the Tacoma, or at least offer it on some cars. A Dodge Dart with the 1.4L engine puts out more power than the current 2.7 Tacoma. I think that is pretty pathetic that the Dart peaks out at 4 more lb·ft of torque at 1300 less RPM!! ( 184 lb·ft at 2500 RPM vs. 180 lb·ft at 3800 RPM)

Have you driven one of those things? By far the worst turbo lag I've ever experienced. It's actually annoying in everyday driving because you have to wind it out just to go anywhere.

I'd take the NA version any day.

I sat in the back seat when we were test driving one, I would take it as a car to put miles on. It takes that little fiat engine some time to spool when it puts out a peak boost pressure of 22 psi from the factory. It would be nice to see an engine around the same displacement with a turbo, it wouldn't have to be as high of boost therefore not as much lag.

But I can't help but hope for a turbo...............diesel. Those Aussies get that nice Landcruiser 70 with that big 4.5 turbo diesel.

Oh it pulls pretty good once it spools up. I'd like to try out the srt4 version they're coming out with soon.

I hate column shifters myself. Probably wouldn't be a deal breaker if it wasn't offered in the truck I was looking at but if its available I'm taking the floor shifter 10/10 times.

I'm happy with a gasoline powerplant, but why does it have to sound like a diesel?!?!

Tired of hearing the brake master squish every time I step on the brake pedal...

I feel that I should be able to fit 33s with no problem! Why can't the cab mount be a little further back?

For 35k OTD it is a crude truck, but hopefully it lasts long enough to make it all worth it.

The truck is great, but as for added features nothing that will add cost to the truck. I would actually like to have some things removed or offered as a choice instead of part of some package.
One is I would not choose electric windows.
They do need to come up with a way to get more miles between tune ups and that should not cost anything.

Sh*t. I didn't buy a first gen then and wouldn't buy a first gen now. The Tacoma, just in size alone, is a huge improvement.

I'm fairly satisfied with my truck, so most of mine fall into the "would be nice to have" category rather than "really want" category.

    Interior (in no special order)..
    - Lighted 4x4 dial.
    - Power outlet plug/panel (not lighter socket) under dash for accessories.
    - Allocation of space in the dash for a third-party GPS.
    - Accommodation for a third-party radar detector under rear view mirror.
    - Power rear window (especially in double-cab).
    - Sunroof option.

    Exterior..
    - Bed light(s) on sides or integrated into overhead brake light.
    - Locking tailgate.

Of course, the absence of any or all of these would not (and did not) stop me from buying the truck.

Not interested in many of the things mentioned by others here. For example, I had a diesel before (Ford F-250 - temperamental, expensive to repair, p.i.t.a.) and would not want another unless absolutely necessary (major towing, etc). Also not a a huge fan of rear disc brakes on vehicles with very little weight in the rear. Drum brakes seem to work best with varying cargo/towing loads. However, disc brakes are cheaper to manufacturer & install on an assembly line (just like front-wheel drive in vehicles), so will likely continue to grow in dominance.

agreed about diesel. most assume they are similar i would assume. but that is why there are specialized diesel mechs.

diesel and gas will be extinct for the masses. but will probably be available by specialized groups in 30 years. electric will take over. but im sure foreign contracts with oil companies need to expire first, of politicians self implode soon

    More Colors
    Diesel, Turbo Diesel
    Higher MPG
    7-Speed Automatic
    Waterproof Interior like FJ
A more badass regular cab, with Baja TX option
    Less Plastic
    Gearing Options, like Jeep
    Longer Warranty
    Sunroofs
    Factory Toppers/Shells
    FJ Trail team floor mats
    265/75/16 standard wheels
    Hood Scoops
    Roll down rear slider
    TRD exhausts
    TRD air intake
    TRD brakes

993 was magic, 996 was crap, 997 was better evolution of 993 in spirit and execution. Do I'm a purist and want to skip back to making the Gen1-like vehicles in 2014 and beyond. Don't mimic Ford or Chevy, just be the best version of Toyota you can be every day. Think no rust, higher gas mileage, reasonable price/value, 0% financing, long warranty, and 200,000 trouble free miles.

Hahaha! I had one on the Dakota I traded for the Taco. I'm still hitting the windshield washer now and again when I go to change gears.

X20 on the power rear slider.
