Automatic vs. 6-Speed

It was from some dealer with a TRD website in Washington State (all I remember was it had a silly name, pullyaup or jerkmeov or something like that). It was about $475 shipped for the longbed version. I remember the shipping is what made the difference.

TRDparts4U is Toyota of Dallas, their shipping was twice as much and they would have whopped me with sales tax.

All of the TRD internet sites are just dealers selling stuff out the back door.

What is there to warranty on a muffler and 5' of pipe?

 

And what kind of warranty would that be? Are you sure they warranty it.
I paid $460 shipped. Any time the dealer can touch the truck and screw it up, I try to avoid it. The exhaust is easy to do, but when you have salaried employees working on a truck they don't give a rats ass about...things happen; just sayin.
If you do have the dealer install it...good luck getting the original exhaust back, unless you like throwing money away.

Yeah Toyota Parts People has the best deal on the exhaust, $373 + reasonable shipping.

Thanks for your suggestions. I am actually gonna be realistic and buy my truck on Saturday and hold off on the exhaust until after my wedding in July. The fiance will be much happier that way. It's just too easy to spend a lot of money on truck stuff right after buying it!

I'm with you Pierced tiger on this one, but its a matter of preference.
I tried the auto didn't like it and bought a 6spd. never even drove it. Great working truck, and I like to contol when to shift.

 

Lots of great opinions for this thread, my preference is for a manual , 6gear. I would rather shift than not, however its not fun in real tight stop and go traffic.
Just think of the older Vettes and performance cars that had very stiff clutch's, in the city thats really tough.
I figured over all the standard would get better mileage on the highway, now that may not be true, these days.
I also like the manual in the snow as I feel I have better control of my truck.
I also do some towing and I would rather shift than have the auto hunt for a gear on small hills.

Its all personal style and what fits your driving habits. These days with everyone doing good maint on auto tranny's they surely will last many years.

I found a deal in Denver that I can't refuse ($26,500 ++) despite pissing off the dealer in Glenwood. Oh well, that's part of the sales tactic to make you feel guilty for not going with them. They'll get over it.

I can vouch for the TRD cat-back....

I had it installed by the dealer for $540. I like it. and i like the way the warenty dosent go away after it. Are you looking for the sound or the performance?

 

I love my 6 speed, but the Auto is a damn nice tranny, both will take abuse, I drove an Auto across country pulling way too much stuff and I witnessed Piercedtiger tugging some heep of a Ford across the state of NY, if you live in a city or really urban go Auto, everything else go stick.

 

I don't know if your Tacomas have it but my 2001 autmatic has a lockout torque converter which, like clockwork, kicks in at 52 mph-feels like an extra shift. I'm sure you new truck guys have it too. Anyway, what it does is it locks out the converter for direct drive action so you recieve the torque benefits of a manual. I love it-try this: leave it out of overdrive then accelerate from 45mph upward at half throttle you should feel an extra like halfshift and your speedo will climb a little faster.

 

And that was only 1 of the 4 vehicles I've hauled with it too!

Even with larger tires I had enough power to put it in 6th on flats, declines, and slight inclines.

 

The warranty wouldn't "go away" after ANY exhaust install. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

 

I was thinking more about upgrades in general. I. E. Acording to the TRD booklet a cold air intake will void powertrain warenties.

 

That would be kind of stupid since TRD makes a CAI....

Either way, with the above mentioned act you can argue that they have to prove the mod caused the problem. Having a lift with bigger tires, and then getting drive train issues might hard to argue. But they shouldn't deny transmission work over a new exhaust or CAI. Especially if you bought TRD versions of those. Could always argue by saying "They're Toyota parts. You mean Toyota's own parts break they vehicles they're designed for?"

 

Again, look up the Magnuson-Moss warranty act. That's complete BS.
