I have a quick question. I have done some searching so far and not much luck. I have a 05 Tacoma. The headlights are stock. Is there a bulb where I can just replace the bulbs with LED bulbs? Ive heard of this with lighting in RV's, trailers, etc but havent heard of it in actual headlights. Does anyone have experience with this? Pictures? Recommendations?

    Thanks,

    Alan

You need several very high power leds with some serious heat-sinking to make viable LED headlights. There is no such thing as a drop in LED bulb replacement for headlights that will generate enough light.

I was thinking the same thing. I haven't done to much research on the subject lately and you know how technology is. I was thinking there could have been a possibility that something new has been introduced.

Quite honestly, a good setup would cost no more than $50 a light..
Cree has a new module out , the MtG-2.
    http://www.cree.com/led-components-... Modules/XLamp/Data and Binning/XLampMTG2.pdf

This module, at 6V , 3A, will do 2000 linens (more than most common headlights). There are already several handheld flashlights that are being built ln this.. the heatsinking is nothing impossible.

So, you can buy a led on a 20mm star for $18. Get a buck driver (and board) for 10-15. Mill a custom pill/ heatsink for 15 each... there is you light. It really should NOT be complicated to get a high lumen led in your headlights....

60 watt H4 bulb 1650 lumens. LED build it your self maybe be an issue as they need to be in the focal point @ 180* pretty hard to do. You want lots of light fairly cheap rallylights.com go with a 100/80 watt H4's they will make the stock lights look yellow.

Www.ddmtuning.com has the hi/lo kit (if yours only has 1 bulb) for like $55 I think. Lifetime warranty on the ballasts. I've had 2 sets for different vehicles and have a bunch if friends who have had the same ones. No problems and a lot better than spending $200+ on HIDs. Shipping usually takes about 3 weeks since they come from Japan but worth the wait.

But it IS complicated... And that's why they don't exist yet. You can't just throw a bulb in and call it a headlight. A LOT of development goes into the reflector/lens to get a beam pattern that is suitable for driving, especially while not blinding oncoming traffic.

That is exactly why HID conversions are generally a bad idea as well. The focal point from the element to the reflector changes and you end up with a lot more scatter which means blinding oncoming traffic AND less useable light on the road
