you traded your factory cold air (pulling air from fender) for a hot air (pulling air from engine compartment). the only gains you see are noise and more dirt on the filter

If I'm not mistaken the AFE design is fully enclosed and pulls air from the same spot in the fender as the stock intake

my mistake (possibly). so you pay for a intake that does the same as the stock setup?

Maybe your stock filter needed to be changed. The gains are marginal at best. Save a little more money and buy a good set of headers if you want real gains.

as with any modification on modern cars you will need to update the ecu...ie the URD MAF cal. An intake alone wont give you much gain but to really set it off you'll have to change the computer. You're now giving your engine more and you need to add more fuel to make power. I have an airaid intake on my truck and i really didnt notice a whole lot of difference other than sound and the power band moving to higher RPM's

    Build thread coming soon!
I also have the Airaid and noticed a huge sound difference. Powerwise, I'm not sure because I only ran about 1 tank of fuel through it before I supercharged it. The supercharger has silenced it again, but at part throttle operation it will whistle slightly like a throttle body spacer does. I really do believe they are worth 10 hp though- the factory one comes in from the fender, does 2 90's into a trapeziodal housing and then 90's twice more before the throttle body. The cold air ones are a straight shot from the fender to the throttle body. TRD's catalogue says their cold air was also worth about 10 hp, so who knows for sure?[IMG]

I have the 1st gen TRD intake and i love it! I did noticd a slight power gain, nothing crazy though. Like others, the biggest difference is going to be in sound. i love it since i am always getting compliments on how my truck sounds. To me the price was worth it, coupled with a good exhaust system you will notice some gains

I have a 1st gen TRD Intake, Which is the exact same thing as the AFE... No noticeable power difference but a significant improvement over sound and I think I got 1-2 MPG improvement.

I believe it's all a mental thing... Like if you add an extra 5 PSI to each tire it feels like your truck is more agile, Or if you always put 87 octane fuel in it and you decide to splurge on 91+ Octane it'll feel faster. While realistically, No. Doing those things won't do either but you want it to have made a significant difference so your ass plays tricks on you to make you think something great has been discovered. It's pretty normal to make up things in your subconscious.

The stock intakes on modern vehicles are made to get as much cold air as safely possible to try and save gas and squeeze out more power... SAFELY, Installing an aftermarket intake will eliminate the dual filtration set up our trucks have that is essential on keeping contaminants out when driving in dusty/sandy conditions (off roading).

With the K&N intake mentioned above, It is probably one of the worse intakes you can buy. Not for performance reasons but for its poor filtering. It doesn't start to filter until the intake is already filthy so particles are being sucked into your engine... On a performance aspect, A few guys on XRU measured the temperatures between intakes and the K&N intake temp was similar to AFE/TRD.

    agreed

true if its the AFE stage 2 Si and the front port has the plug INSTALLED...........it will yield ZERO temp changes over stock, but it will improve airflow due to less bends and no resonators. Ive ran the URD, the AFE stage 2 Si, and have tested the AFE and stock back to back with the ultragauge......no temp changes because the stock setup can draw ambient air temps as shown by ultragauge......u cant get anything colder than ambient without an old school ice box mod.

URD again cant draw anything colder than ambient even tho it will show up to 3* cooler than ambient. I assume there is some kinda error.

URD will achieve lower temps in a standing still condition, but who just sits at idle for fun and is worried about charge temps?

    Both have pros and cons

as it sits, Im running the AFE stage 2 Si (traded my urd for it)......didnt wanna monkey around with the URD and intercooler.

All of them have an intake. They come from the factory that way.
