Just a bunch of old crap
    Hi Maui folks,

I'm visiting Maui for my first time at the end of June (fiance won an award trip from her work, we're staying in at the Westin in Ka'anapali for 5 days) and we are looking to break away from the lame work people and do some of our own things. Not sure yet but we will probably rent a car for a couple days so we can get out and away from the resort.

We love to hike, and want to do a good trail while we're out there, preferably something with some good views but also some good dense greenery.

We also want to know where is good on the west side of the island to snorkel as well. Not sure I trust some of the mixed reviews I keep reading, and everyone seems to have a different opinion.

I figured I'd get the best suggestions from the locals. Any other recommendations for anything cool I should visit while around Lahaina and that side, let me know!

    Thanks,
    Adam

And there's some pretty good snorkeling right by your guys hotel. Honulua bay is real nice like 15 min down the road from kanapali. It's a reserve plenty of fish!! Sadly our island is becoming over fished sad to see it get there. But Honulua bay is real nice for snorkeling!

Wow! Thanks for the recommendations everyone!

Tell me more about that one. We're looking to cover some good distance on a hike, preferably something 5-10 miles. If you two don't mind waiting, we can try and meet up. We'll be there during the week only, so let me know if that works out for you two and we can hit it up. I just need to figure out when to get the rental car, because everything else they scheduled for us has shuttles, except for our own free time.

That's good to know that a good spot is close. My fiance doesn't care to get in the water, but I MUST snorkel while I'm there. I'm sure if I get her into a good spot, she'll love it.

Keep the ideas coming, everyone! I really appreciate the candid feedback. We tread lightly and don't want to come off as tourists on our trip (probably unavoidable) but we would like to see the island from a native's point of view as best we can.

I was just there a week ago for the first time ever and it was amazing! I stayed at the Aston Mahana on Ka'anapali which is close to where you will be. As far as snorkeling is concerned, you should take a morning and go to Black Rock. It is out in front of the Sheraton so not far from you at all. Great stuff to see there. Also not sure what your plans are but I highly recommend taking a boat out to Molokini crater and snorkellimg there. Tons to see for sure.

We took the road to Hana as well. Sure it was kinda cool, but I think once was enough for me for a while. The sugar cane is a whore for water so a lot of the nice waterfalls weren't very bustling yet. The black sand beach was really cool as well as the freshwater caves.

Get some shaved ice with ice cream while you're there too. Its big, but DELICIOUS. Plan on spending a full day just walking around and looking at the shops in Lahaina. We seemed to spend a lot of time there.

Scuba diving was great too... Ziplining was great... shit it was all great! The people there were very cool. And you will see more Tacomas than you have ever seen in your life. Lemme know if you have questions as I was only there for 5 days and have tons of suggestions lol

Thanks Colton, all great suggestions. I just wish I had more than 5 days to check it all out. Actually with travel, we really only have 3 1/2 days to do it all. It's going to be tight.
