Enlisting in Air Force have a few Questions??

It will be the contract you sign that you will do 4 or 6 years and that you have been granted the AFSC of XXXXX and Job of _______________

 

I will pull up the Form Number and post a data masked version on mine when I go into work tomorrow..

 

Be a 2T2.. we work hard, play hard and we are at almost every base around the world.. a buddy of mine was Thrilled he would be a F22 Mechanic until he got stationed at Langley and then learned there was only 2 other bases he could ever be stationed at.

 

Well I scored an 85 on my asvab for the AF so my recruiter said I qualify for pretty much everything just need to narrow it down.

I will check it out. Is there a title for your job or is it just 2T2?

 

Congrats on your decision! If you want to make it a career I'd say anything with drones. That is the way things are moving now. Another career field that ties in with that is intel, but that one is very broad. I'll PM you.

 

Check out Civil engineering (CE). They deal with all contrction wether it be grading dirt to contructing new buildings. I'd check out contracting or safety. They are in demand right now and you can my some serious cash after the AF.

you have some good choices there. I've never heard anyone really hate their life over there. My first supervisor cross trained into sensor operator and he loves it.

Those in bold, I know for a fact those people hate life. I am an AMMO troop. While it isn't the worst job I've ever had but it's not what I thought I was signing up for. It's not an easy job but there are many "jobs" within our career field to kind of choose from. We are stationed at most bases worldwide.
Mechanical in the AF is like this. If you like opening a brand new package and find a new toy that needs assembly. To assemble said toy you will have to ask your dad to borrow all the tools and equiptment need to assemble said toy. Then you will need to call your grandfather to make sure this is correct and have permission to assemble this toy.
Once you get the toy out you find a set of instructions that would make a grown man cry, just by the shear thickness. You open the intructions and find out that they are written in a whole new language that only becomes natural after much practice.
On top of all that, you have to watch out for your asshole brother that likes to tell if you do anything wrong and gets you into serious trouble.

This is the very basic I can explain it but multiply this by about ten and that is where the air force set the standard. Sounds fun right?

I know a few that say this job is ok. It's better than mechanical. My friend had to crosstrain into 2T2 from AMMO 2W0 and really enjoys it. way more than his previous job. I worked with the F22s...... fun times, I really felt bad for those guys.

Agree with intel and UAVs. Anything to do with computers will be in high demand.

Overall man.... The AF is not a bad job and congrats for choosing blue. All the other services pick at each other but they all envy the AF.
If you are considering OTS I strongly recommend you do everything you can as a civilian before enlisting. It is very very tough right now to go OTS. One of our TSgts has a masters and did not get accepted... this was his third time trying too.
Other than that I can tell you I've seen a good bit of the world. Way more than I ever would have before the military. Sure I've spent a ton of time away from my family and frinds but in the end it all works out.

OP do you want to travel a lot or do you have a family? What is it about you that makes you tick and what would be your ideal day to day job?

 

Think about IT and cyber security. If you hate being in the Armed Forces you can leave at the end of your contract and walk into a good paying job, even more so if you get any sort of security clearance.

So many soldiers don't think beyond their service obligation. Do a job in the service you can enjoy, and if you want to become a civilian again you will have the training you need to be successful. Oh, and look into loan repayment. No reason you should have to pay back all of those student loans when Uncle Sam will pick up the tab.

With your degree you are looking at the Civil Engineer (CE) portion of the AF. I work in CE and for the first couple of years you won't actually be using your degree. If you do, it will be on a minimal basis. There are many career paths to choose within CE. You could stay in the traditional format, or go RED Horse (It's the gun-ho portion that does a lot of bare base stuff). Lastly you could become a Explosive Ordnance Disposal Officer (EOD). I know a little more about this only because it's my career field. If you have any questions just let me know.

Do a Google Search of Air Force AFSC's and you can read about the different jobs. The only thing you have to be careful about going into things with specific airframes.. IE only F16s or Only F22s.. as they are not at every base so you can limit where you get stationed..

 

Intel.....with emphasis on cyber....cough, cough....ahem....look over here. 18 years STRAIGHT on the flight line bro....it has taken a toll. Oh, did I say intel? With emphasis on cyber? Good. Don't ask any questions. Just do it and buy me a beer later. And for what it's worth, lots of good advice in this post.

 

Thanks for all the great replys I really appreciate it! I never considered most of the jobs that were recommended here but it gave me a lot to look at and was able to narrow my choices down. I leave for MEPS tomorrow so will see how it goes, hopefully I can go DEP.

 

Some NDI jobs as a civilian pay pretty well.

Well I went thru MEPS this week but was unable to DEP because the computers were down and they could not finish a few things. I was able to get a list of jobs though based on my physical qualifications and it looks like intel is gonna be my best bet. I don't qualify for any mechanical or electronics jobs because I'm colorblind.

 

Not much to say that hasn't already been said.. But I would like to elaborate the FACT you don't wana let them put you where they want you, like going open (I guess that's AF term like the Navy's undesignated).. Your doing a good thing by asking questions now trying to learn about the different jobs etc. So deff take your time and be smart and think it thru and thru what you choose, cause once your in, it's not easy switchin.. And from all I've ever seem to hear the AF takes better care of there people better than the other branches in many diff ways. Good luck with your decision and thanks for your future service.

 

I am an army recruiter in SC they only branch that gets to choose a job before going to meps is the Army all others sign open contract and you will pick shortly before you leave for training if you don't like what they have to offer to bad, already signed now the pressure to take a job sets in. if you haven't already, weigh your options by talking to an army recruiter about there aviation field in the officer corps.

SSG Lewis thank you for the info sir. I did think long and hard before choosing a service and I'm pretty set on the Air Force. One thing I've learned from all the great info in this thread is I will probably wait for a guaranteed job before I sign any papers at all. I'm actually pretty happy with the jobs that are left on my list of choices after my color blindness knocked off a few of the jobs I was really hoping for. I just need to narrow things down a bit again and do some more job research.

 

im metals tech (aircraft metals technology) and color blind. if you have any questions pm me. i had it guarenteed before i left for basic. i love my job and couldnt possibly want to do anything else. it is an awesome career field with endless possibilites. a member on here username "luka" is at the metals tech technical school right now. and metals tech can nearly go to any base

 

Awesome man we are all one team one fight just wanted to make sure you shop around. But to narrow it down there are forums on military.com and the USAF recruiting page where you can talk to airman in those fields and you recruiter should be able to get in contact with people in Those fields to help you to make your choice easier.
