You know, I'm a big shotgun fan and all, but my 870 marine mag is long as hell and heavy when loaded. Plus in confined spaces a pump isn't exactly the weapon of choice. I think Rich had the right idea with the .357, although I'm a .44 man myself. Takes up less room in the truck too. :)

Not necessarily true, I can latch my ARE from the inside but I can't lock it from the inside unless I upgrade to the key fob auto lock. A lot of the shells I looked at were the same way. I was also looking at LEER shells. Out this way, Snugtop isn't as common, we're primarily stuck with LEER, ARE and Jeraco for shells.

x2, this turned into a sleeping tough guy thread

Mine is an ARE and doesn't lock from the inside, and I keep the screens open on the windoors. I have to agree that it is still a lot safer than the tent I was used to sleeping in. I'll pass on the bed stick and my pistol can't leave the state. Usually have a hatchet handy though. We don't have any scary bears or anything around here either though.

    This thread kinda got derailed.

OP, if you look at the latches on most shells they're not particularly secure, most rear windows/hatches you can snatch hard and they'll pop open; a lot of the sliding window latches are plastic and you can defeat them pretty easy too. Of course it's also easy to just break a window out.
Like I posted before, the easiest thing I've found to do is just loop a piece of rope (I use a piece of 550 cord) over the interior latch or one of the locking bars and hook the other end to something in the truck.

I've slept in some pretty crazy places over the years including truck stops, Wal-Marts, rest stops, church parking lots, plenty of campgrounds, places on the side of the road and a month down in Baja, and so far I haven't been bothered other than a few cops asking if I was alright. I've also done plenty of tent camping off my motorcycle. Things may change one day, but using common sense and situational awareness go a long way.

Get the remote lock option! I love just having to use my key fob.

In the western Canadian Provinces one is not allowed to camp along the road (turn-outs, rest areas etc.); one MUST camp in designated camp-grounds (Federal, state/Province or private). Per the MilePost (the Al-Can highway guide),

"Overnighting in rest areas and turnouts is unsafe and is illegal unless otherwise posted."

Why road-side camping is unsafe is left to the reader's imagination. Presumably, if the big, brown furry guys don't get ya, first, the Rangers take you into the woods and feed you to them? ;)

Tenting? ... fagetaboutit - not for me - at least up there or in Alaska (from which I just returned in May).

Yes, I brought a slug-thrower and have carry-permits, BUT ... it is illegal to discharge a firearm in a camp-ground (no apparent exceptions for self-defense). Now, maybe a Canadian pokey is not as bad as a Mexican one, but I'd rather spend vacation time sight-seeing than calling lawyers from the pokey. Remember, these folks think that pepper-spray is a 'weapon'! :(

fyi: the only handguns I saw in Canada were on the border guards, who REALLY frown on comrade-citizens' self-defense! Carrying is ok for them; but, not for you! (`might put them out of a job? :D) The fact that calling them when needed might be either impossible (no cell-phone towers) or require waiting many hours for the RCMP to arrive with the sled dogs ... is lost on them ... or they don't care.

    ===================================

Now, 'back to the originally scheduled program': Do shell-caps come with internal security locks?

The recent trip got me investigating options. fyi: thus far, I've not bought either a pickup or shell-cap ... which is why I'm asking ... FIRST.

btw, THANKS - for all the good & humorous guidance. I much appreciate it.

My Arrow canopy doesn't lock from the inside.
But the previous canopy I had on my old 86 did have a T handle on the inside, and a hockey stick(eh?) across the back would lock it closed.

As far as no camping in rest stops in BC goes, that's only posted for official highway rest stops. No one is going to bother you if you pull off onto a side road (preferably out of sight) and sleep. Or you could stop in at Walmart and park with all the RVs, or find a truck stop and sit with the other semis.

I would be ... due to widely spaced alternatives.

I found that when one gets more than about half-way up the western Provinces, it's usually about a full-day's drive between tiny towns, which MIGHT have a room to let (if you're not a late arrival).

If one sees some nice scenery and is overcome by the desire to to pull over and watch the wildlife (nearly everywhere; it's so fabulous), I often had to reject the impulse - to reach the next town with a motel the same day. Too much rushing through, as a result. I gained a fuller appreciation for why campers, despite the miserable gas-mileage (and ~$6/US gallon in B.C.), are so overwhelmingly popular in Alaska, the western Provinces and western U.S. states. It's a different, cathartic life-style ... free of current media insanities ... a NICER world. Hence, during the long drives, thoughts turned to the possibility of camping. How feasible might it be? ... what would the logistics be? ... getting a wam shower, gas-mileage etc.

It was amusing to notice how few cars or even SUVs are used by the residents (outside the main cities/towns). It seemed like the Silverado/Sierra was "the national vehicle". :) A trucker told me that ... without one, one doesn't get out in the winter!

Yeah, it would be horrible to think people actually enjoy being outside and enjoying nature when they could be stuck in front of a TV screen playing Playstation all day... :jerkoff:

Per the SnugTop website, the nearest dealer is in EUREKA, MO ... halfway across the country from me. I don't think that option is going to work (for me).

... not sightseeing through Canada, my friend; they REALLY frown on handguns, especially on non-residents!

... not yet. `thought it prudent to 'do my homework', first. Hopefully, the major manufacturers have/offer realistic security solutions.

What's (most) interesting to me is discovering how little that security is an issue with buyers! I would have thought that security would matter even more than how it looks? ... maybe, I'm too practical? I mean, how many would check into a motel that looks nice, but, oh btw, there are no locks/bolts on the rooms? ;) ... duh ?
