I wish to post this up before it becomes a topic for discussion,
    since this -is- my business.

Until you personally own the entire network when you communicate
anything electronically on a provider network, expect anything and
everything to be available for Big Data Forensics (data mining).

Governments have real security problems and will monitor
    anything
electronic that is deemed usable for crimes, or collaboration
of crimes, of any nature. Period.

Is this an imperfect world ? You betcha.

Should you post, text, tweet, email, phone anything you really want to keep a secret ? No, never.

    this is how I feel.

There are just so many articles and posts today (not here) about
people whining yet again, about government big brother

well, if the government was not interested in this surveillance,
we would really be getting stomped on by terrorists and evil-doers
constantly. as it is it can't all be prevented. but a lot can be done
to head it off, or track parties involved when the shit does hit the fan...

This is how I feel as well. People don't want big brother watching until another 9/11 happens. Then they bitch and moan cause they shouldve known it was gonna happen.
edit: oh, and I don't see this thread lasting long.

I agree with Lazylegs - if you're doing nothing wrong then you have nothing to worry about.

The government doesn't care if you're cheating on your wife or if you drank too much last night. It's the terrorists / mass murders that they are worried about, and if we have to give up a little privacy then so be it.

Maybe they'll scoop up some gangbangers and drug dealers while they're at it....

This goes back to the 80s and earlier in its roots for gathering electronic info.
On base we were told all calls could or would be monitored, they actually showed us the vans and some gear that they do it with. That's just the tip of the iceberg. I've seen some other gear in that day that was staggering in its capacity to a similar end.

Big gov. could watch us, but likely couldn't give a rats ass what we are typing or saying. They are looking for key words and phrases, "Tacoma" , "lift" ,etc wont get their attention. Words associated with espionage, terrorism, and national security will. 10 trillion calls to sort through. I doubt they even look at our calls at work on that system.

On the other hand, I read the book "1984" back in 1982. I didn't think they would get to this point so easily and willingly.

Not the only problem, but one of them is there not very good at it.

Look at Boston. The did not stop that.

So we can see that this will not prevent any thing just help convict people after they have committed an atrocity. Minority report and Person of interest is still decades away from the "Future crime Bureau"

Actually, according to the news articles, they're just looking at logs of calls (e.g. how long, what number the call was made to). They would then use any suspicious activity to zero in on a suspect. For all the people bitching about privacy, how many of them use credit cards or debit cards for purchasing?
