I was planning a trip down there next week. The wild fires are making me a bit hesitant about doing that though.

It is fine. I have no desire to battle that road anytime soon.
I didn't see another soul when I was up there.

I remember when I went. We almost turned around because we thought there was no more road. Haha. But I know what you mean, going through those boulders was rough and took some patience to get through.

Beautiful place though. Minus the splitting headache the first night because of the altitude.

Ah ha. I have a book about the Mine in the Sky. Great history in that area. You can drive there? Thought the road was closed at the mine.
Great country up there. Did a trip to the other side a couple years ago with a good group. It was great.

Yep unfortunately the fire season has kicked in full force here, everything is so dang dry. Now they are closing just about every mountain around here. Hoping they can't get the big ones already burning put out quickly.

Rode the dirt bike back there years ago. No problem with the gates. I have seen recent pictures of jeeps way back there. Planning a Taco trip up there late summer/early fall to check it out again.

Interesting place. I'd be interested in hearing about your experience if you go back there.

I poked around some maps. The forest service maps (2013) from my phone show the route up the mountain. There is a wilderness boundary before that lower Morgan Lake, so no motorized vehicle traffic allowed beyond that, but it does show a route up.

The Inyo FS 2010 maps only shows the road to the mine's stamp mill.

Last time I hit snow before the Wilderness boundary. I believe the area of the mine and behind it up the the boundary is private property. Ive never noticed any signs and have seen photos of jeeps and rhinos back there recently. I do have a recreation map of the area and it shows the jeep trail as "hiking only". I have a feeling this might be a case of the map publisher pushing their agenda. I have run into this issue several times where the Nature Conservancy or other ECO-Nazi organizations overstep their boundaries on private property or mining claims for their own agenda. I'd be more worried about the the actual land owner, but if everything is wide open (as it often is in the Owens Valley) it might not even be an issue. Can't wait to go check it out!

x2 on the political agenda being worked into maps. I've seen and experienced it too. If I was going up there I'd call Inyo FS, and talk to a ranger. The ones I've spoken too were extremely helpful, understanding and generally quite respectful of public motorized vehicle usage of public land. The last guy, can't remember his name, even mailed me two maps. :D
