due to the tile being travertine with a tumbled edge, the space is almost nill. so the grout will fill in the few pores on the stone and fill in around the tumbled edges. if that makes sense

Yep, makes perfect sense. Mine was Travertine but it was a smooth finish.

What did you use for waterproofing behind the tile and for the floor?

I wish I could say it was uncommon. But it's not. I used to live in an apartment building that was hit three times by this kind of "accident".

Driver told the cops he put the car in reverse and when it went forward, he panicked and hit the gas. Aside from the hydrant, he took out the water main for the two businesses...

They suck. I will pick some up from the taco truck instead. Maybe a fruit cup to go with. Now that's a good taco.

We weren't concerned in overdoing the shower. I got my advice from old school Italians who do this all the time and followed their lead. They only said to ditra floor if I want for peace of mind, but they didn't say to use if I didn't want to. Floor is small so only floor gettin it. But I may not get to floor today since I have dinner tonight for work :)

I would be concerned without any waterproofing on the walls, at least up 3' on all sides. The water will wick into the concrete/grout/mortar and it will never dry. You will end up with mold and rotting where the 2x4's meet the concrete board. I opted to go with the Schlueter kerdi system all the way up the walls. We tested it before drywall went in below it and it held 20 gallons of water for 5 hours, no leaks. I never want to have to come back and tear it apart because i took a shortcut when i put it in.

No tub? Is that a master bath? My master has a shower stall only currently with fiberglass floor, or plastic, not sure. Whatever was done in i believe 80's reno.,but that bath will be gutted as well. thisis the main bath will main,y be used for my girl to bathe in. I guess time will tell, but tile were put on with a mastic type cement. I'll grab pics of it if I remember. I feel the advice I was given is solid advice and am not concerned , we'll see :)

Yes, This is the master shower. The tub is in the kids bathroom.

It will take some time, It isn't something that will happen overnight, but eventually I think you will have some issues. JMHO.

    Here is the finished product.
