Converting a Truck into an SUV.

i did a search but couldn't find anything. im looking for information on converting my 05' regular cab to a suv type vehicle. thinking about 1 of 2 approaches. the easiest would be to put a shell on the back with a boot, remove the rear window and mount a jeep wrangler seat in the back with belts facing backwards so a person could ride back there.

idea 2 would be to put a shell on the back and cut the rear bulkhead out of the truck welding or sealing the shell and bed to the cab some how and putting a seat in the bed facing forward with belts etc. similar to the early 4runner conversions ive seen.

has anyone done something like this or seen a write up on one that was done?

Seems like a lot of work to not make it look like a hack job. I'd sell and buy a runner. I know this doesn't really help ya but I'm sub'd to see where this goes. Good luck with your search.

 

Not sure the person riding in the bed of the truck has the safety they need in case of an accident

 

x2. I also don't know how you would get around safety laws with inspections and stuff.

Yeah remember they cab is sheet metal and a shell is fiberglass (usually). To get a tight seal between the two that would be able to withstand the trials of off roading it would most likely have to be welded together. You'd need to build an entirely cost ineffective custom setup requiring major cutting and welding. Buy a 4runner

Yea it would be a cool show car I guess but it's prob a ton of work. If you did do it I would keep the shell off and still cut out the back and put seats but keep it open like a jeep. Maybe a roll bar would be good too

 

X2 what happens if you roll over, the shell has no structure to keep passengers safe.

Sell your truck and buy an SUV.

 

Lest we forget, the body is mounted on rubber bushings while the bed is mounted directly to the frame. That means the two pieces will move differently, so anything you do to connect them will have to be flexible. 4runner sounds like the right answer.

 

^^^^ this. From my understanding the 4runner is the SUV Tacoma anyways right?

 

With a better frame and a better engine than the Tacoma

Don't do it. Invest in a 4 Runner/Rav 4/Highlander/etc...........I agree with "Might look like hack job"

 

A Space Kap could be great but big $$$. If you are lucky you can find one dirt cheap. These things go for 6-10k+, new.
