Fear is the easiest way to give up god given rights. The USA was not founded on protection. It was founded on Freedom. Freedom isnt free. it costs $1.05 As a free country we choose to live with crazies, its a price we have to live with.

I'm terrible at debating and arguing, but it's really clear to me that some oversight committee should be cutting funding more and more every time something like this happens. American agencies spying on American citizens should to lead to prison sentences. I don't care which agency is doing it. Being an American citizen automatically gets you protection from being spied on by our government. Should England, Canada or some other country's spies tip us off about something, they're free to ensure that it doesn't happen, but not jail someone based solely on information.

Catching some bad guy before they do something is not the same thing as catching someone after they have done something, to me. I don't care how good the intel is, it's not proof of what will happen. Maybe they go right up to the point of pulling the trigger or whatever and change their minds.

Any Americans spying on American citizens should quit their job. With the current state of morals and ethics, I'm sure that won't happen, but you know it should. Information gleaned from accidentally spying on American citizens should be handled by a Federal judge.

Feel free to spy on foreign countries all you want, unless there's an agreement or treaty. Again, with the current state of things, I doubt those are truly honored.

Precisely, this must have been what the Nazis told their citizens in 1934 'trust us, it's for your own protection"

The original Patriot act was intended for the acts of terrorism being committed by foreign operatives. The current Prism action being revealed is spying on American citizens only. The act is not spying on non American people. All information is being collected on Americans communicating with Americans, no information from outside the country coming into America is being collected by Prism. This document is being copied now for achieving by our government.
Just as the IRS used it's powers to prevent tea party groups from being active before the election, by using the power of the government to delay and prevent citizens to have legal tax exempt group representation. We must trust the elected and appointed government agency officials that the collected data is not being abused by those same officials.
We have given up many privacies already, many are not being noticed by the average citizen. Do you notice how many cameras are pointed at the traffic intersections around the country? This is not the various red light cameras, but those that are aimed at you in your truck or car when you stop. Our major cities are now filled with cameras watching all your movements. Many post here that they have nothing to hide, so who cares about being watched. We depend on our rights to keep us from being persecuted by unknown groups and our government. Look at the rights being assaulted by Local, state and federal governments. The various governments are now trying to tell you what you can eat or drink or smoke, and it is for your own good. You can not purchase a incandescent light bulb over the size of 60 watts now. The government in it's own wisdom, not the market place, has decided that you do not need a 75 watt or 100 watt light bulb. And next year you will only be able to purchase a 40 watt light bulb and when they are gone, the government says you will only use the light bulbs that they decide is best for you. How much ammunition have you been able to purchase lately, the government has first rights to millions of rounds for their use, how much can you get now.

If you want to give up your freedoms, just keep ignoring all the news. And hope that you can trust your present government with your rights.

Well, I guess Canada's low technology is paying off for you now, Oz. Your government's advanced surveillance technology is pretty much limited to devices (a drill) to make peep holes in girls' dressing rooms. As far as I know, that means you likely won't be surveilled. :D
