Parked next to one of these the other day and I couldnt believe how small it was. Then a corolla parked next to it and the Brat was even smaller. I thought they were cool, AWD, and with those rear seats they were considered passenger cars so avoided a heavy tariff.

I remember back in maybe 1986 or so I borrowed my Dad's Brat and picked up some hitchhikers on my way to Tarryall. They were just kids, four of them, the oldest maybe 18. Said they got lost from their main bunch and were just going back to their base. Trouble was, they were about 20 miles from where they said their main bunch was at Jefferson Lake, and wanted me to take them further away south, which seemed odd. They didn't seem dangerous, so I took them south and dumped them off. I wonder if those mutts were the origin of the South Park show. The leader sure was creative.

I remember the Subaru Brat. It was pretty cool, especially with the OEM sleeping bags and canvas tent options for the bed. Of course, I just never could get past the name. That name was certainly attention getting, but I suspect it also hurt sales (stopped me from buying one). Surprised to see how small the Brat is next to a Tacoma.

By the way, Reagan (the president) owned a Brat. He talked about it in one of the videos of him on his ranch. He evidently used it to run around the ranch.

Brats are awesome! My pops had one back in the day and loved riding in the back jump seats. He had a CB with a 108" whip, the T-tops, red with the crazy graphics. I remember him having a custom steering wheel as well. He broke his finger when he skidded off the road one winter day by getting it stuck in one of the holes on it. Was a great rig until he detonated the motor towing a trailer.... :(

How long did it take him to complete one lap? Last time I was there in 89 the big boys were doing 250 MPH on the long straight away!

The Brat was a cool car. Not a great off road vehicle but so out of the box it had its own niche.

Grandfather has a Brat up in Kansas. I've owned a Ranchero before and kinda "get" the whole "car-truck" thing, but have never really had any interest in these myself. Shame these kind of vehicles never really caught on... They'd be great for many/most truck buyers who don't really use the full capabilities of their trucks but just want to carry a few bags of mulch or whatever.

I thinks Subaru's are cool, boxer engine, some have great all wheel drive systems. Some turboed to with in an inch of their lives. They kick ass in ralley racing.

the one I took the picture of had T-tops too. Looked like it was loaded, but ragged out and being used as a work vehicle.
I bet good ones are real collectable now.

My first experience with a Subaru was with a girl who I deeply admired at the moment. We ended up knocking off both inside door handles and one of the window cranks through the course of that evening. A bit more of what we were doing and we wouldn't have been able to get out of the car. Then I heard of the Brat and I wasn't running down to buy one. If a Subaru couldn't stand up to a bit of extreme parking, how the hell was it going to do any off-roading? Then I read how they gave Mickey Thompson one to destroy and it took him twenty four hours of some major non-road stuff to kill it. That brought it up a couple of notches in my eyes. I think it was too small to be a big hit here in the states.

As a side note, the U.S. had some major restrictions on importing trucks at that time. That's why they put the seats in the back so it could be imported as a "station wagon". These same restrictions gave rise to the Four Runner which started out as basically a unibody pickup with a shell and a seat in the back as well.
