When being around customers and other employees do you think chewing gum can come across as unprofessional? What are your opinions on this?

Could it even come down to a bad customer experience?

More professional than a big ol' chaw..a lot of the time, gum soothes my urge to dip..but still, if I had something really "professional" to do, no gum. Then again, I'm a nurse and wipe asses for a living so I don't do "professionalism"

All I know is that I can't stand people to make excessive noise while chewing gum.

Also, I sometimes gleek when I chew gum. I don't know about yall, but I don't wanna be gleeked on by store employees, or coworkers for that matter. Keep gleeking out of the work place!

Ditto. Gum or food... chewing sounds are not fun to listen to.
I don't even like the Kit-Kat commercials where people are biting and crunching the cookie bars.

Even if your job doesn't require frequent communication, keep any gum chewing to the level of a breath freshener... chew it for a few minutes while on break or in the can and spit it out. Even just sitting at your desk working, others will see you chomping away and it looks bad.

Obviously depends on your job. Construction work where it's cool to smoke? Gum isn't an issue.
Sales? Don't even think about it.

The worst is people eating cereal, so much slurping and other irritating noises like using the spoon on the bowl as some kind of horrid instrument.

Honestly, I don't like hearing people make any unnecessary noises, like breathing..... jk

Or when people are trying to be quite by making useless little pussy coughs instead of actually coughing. I would rather somebody hack it up instead of hearing quite little "aheh's" every 30 seconds.

Chewing gum while engaging customers is unprofessional IMO. But not when interacting with other employees.

    Edit:
I work in the OR of a local hospital and would never engage a patients family chewing gum nor the doctor I'm working with...

    The better coast
Depends on how they go about it....

If everything else about them is good, posture, hygiene etc...then I have no problem with it.

But if they are slouching, have bad hygiene etc....then gum just amplifies these.

Depend on you job. If I am banking and your chewing like cows on grass. Ya its unprofessional. If you do construction work like myself then its alright.

I personally think open mouth chew is unprofessional even if your not working. I dont want to know/see what your chewing.

Open mouth chew of anything in front of me will get you one of the following, depending on what you are chewing:

    A) Ignored for the rest of your life.
    B) Vomit in your lap.

If I was conducting some type of business with someone who is smacking on gum I would not take them seriously. While at work It shows a lack discipline and professionalism. I'm a Cop in the Air Force and if some senior NCO caught me smacking on gum at work they would probably smack me upside the head and get in my face. Any other time outside of work it's different as long as you don't have to talk or smacking away like a cow.

If you're dealing with customers.... definitely unprofessional.

You don't need to have a wad of gum in your mouth while trying to effectively talk about critical customer relations, sales, or information.

    Where I work...In a factory... chew away!!!
