How much is too many miles on a tacoma?

I recently bought my 2002 tacoma xtra cab prerunner for $7,200
with 140,000miles. i personally think i paid a little too much ( but then all tacomas are high priced). What do you think? and how much miles do you recken i can get out of it? Thanks!

 

with regular maintenance prolly 275k?

 

I had 225k on my '94 when I traded it.

It was down on power, I suspect the timing chain was stretched, but I really didn't take care of it.
I had a K&N air filter in it, and it burned oil. Once it started using oil (maybe 125k?) I started getting careless about oil changes and just pulled into Iffy Lube maybe every 8-10k.

Condition and maintenance history mean more than miles. Mileage only tells you how far it's been driven.... not HOW it's been driven.

even then if its in great shape(motor & frame) and you can feel the torque, 275K is't much. 1st Gen motors have been very well known to go 400K+ with just good gas & oil changes. I paid $6K for my 99' 4x4 w/ 208K, auto, tip top running n a few mods...i def wouldn't hesitate to drive from Alaska cross country

 

Don't forget timing belt changes on the V6.

It's all about maintenance and how you drive it. Treat the truck well, and you might get 400k out of it- never know til you get there. I know a few guys that have 350-400k on their Yotas, (no mega-serious part failures) and they don't do much more than change the oil and use decent gas.

 

Mine had 200,000 when I traded it in.

 

I used to work at a Toyota dealership. Highest mileage Tacoma I ever saw was a 1995.5 2wd with the 2.4L and 720,000mi. Original engine and trans. Not sure but I think it was the original clutch as well. Came in for bad fuel mileage, new 02 sensors and a plug change and he was good to go!

Edit: Highest 3.4 I ever saw was in a 4Runner, the guy donated it to us at 500,000mi.

There was a guy I reading from another forum from the Houston area that around 750K miles on his 4Runner.

 

Yeah he was a cool old guy, they tried to give him money for it but he wanted to donate it. One of the service writers drives it every day now. I think they cut him a really really good deal on a new 4Runner (something like 50% off).

I had a 1998 Toyota Tacoma that I paid 5 grand cash for about 4 years ago when I traded her in she had 165000 miles. I've never had to do anything to that truck but change the oil. I recently bought a 2005 with 130000 miles on it. They gave me three grand at trade in for my 1998. I'm told that they are easily a 300000 Mile truck, that's in a Toyota Tacoma. With the recent purchase of my 2005 they gave me a three-year bumper to bumper warranty. I needed something with a very low monthly payment I was able to get the truck for 2:20 a month for 4 years. With what I paid for the truck even if I had an issue after the 3 year warranty I could still sell the truck for cash and pay off my loan.

 

My 13 taco with the 4.0 v6 pings in warm/hot weather. It only has 44k on it. I am hoping it will last 300-400k. Is that realistic with a (relatively lightly) engine ping?
I live in a hot climate.

 

You're most likely hearing what's known as "taco tick". It's a common sound on Tacoma's. The 1GR-FE engine is very noisy and makes all kinds of sounds in varying temperatures. You'll be fine.

 

Picked up my double cab for $5900 it's got 254k on it now, never had any issues

 

Yes over 380,000 on mine a clutch, starter and radiator all so far. Use chevron to get rid of the noises. Mine had chevron premium for the first 200,000 plus regular oil changes
