It's not a matter of patriotism. The problem is the information is still considered classified by the US government. Viewing classified information on an unclassified government computer is a security violation. Until it's unclassified, it's forbidden even if it's in the public view. Same goes for the Wikileaks stuff.

This is absolutely the worst mentality to take, even for a service member. It's a circumvention of the 4th Amendment, and regardless of if that makes us "feel safer" it's not a relevant excuse. Make it a legal, ethical process (Sorry, congressional approval does not put FISA above the 4th amendment) that conforms to reasonable search and seizure and not only will the general public get on board, but our international reputation would save some face.

Wow! Just Wow. I can't imagine the thought process of some people in the world. It just boggles my mind.I REALLY should not be doing this, but I will throw my opinions and comments in anyway. Why not?

Seriously? I mean SERIOUSLY? That is your argument for this? I don't give a rat's butt if I am towing the legal line perfectly. That does NOT give the government the right to arbitrarily go through my phone records and private emails without PROBABLY CAUSE and a WARRANT. That is what our country was founded on: The PEOPLES rights over the GOVERNMENTS rights.

Perfect example of where things can potentially head. First comes reading our private emails and listening in on our phone calls. What next? Random searches of a car WITHOUT A WARRANT, just because well hell, you MIGHT just have a bomb in your car and we could save hundreds of lives that way. Next thing you know it will be like the USSR used to be and you had to have papers with you when you traveled. Want to take a road trip from California to Florida? Well you better get your papers together, plan your trip, then contact each state for "papers" to allow you to pass through on your way....Oh yeah, and be prepared at each border to have your persons and personal belongings searched as well. You might have something in there...oh look, you have a diesel truck with spare fuel for your trip, and you have a bag a fertilizer in the bed. YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE A BOMB! ARREST THIS FAMILY AND QUESTION THEM ALL!

Yeah, it sure SEEMS like a crazy thought, but it happened in the USSR, and it happened in Germany.

Just a thought here, but how do the best people at their jobs GET to be the best? EXPERIENCE. How do you get experience? TIME. There is NO substitute for experience.

    ........

    folks

    ........

put aside the politics, I posted this so you know

    a) it is happening, -everything- is logged somewhere you have no control over

    b) don't be stupid, and don't put anything you don't want discovered into any electronic
communication. me personally, I don't do anything illegal so I have no worries

    c) these policies for surveillance may be modified but the surveillance will never stop,
it will only get better at the job of forensics and tracking

    d) if you rely on automatic deposits or online banking you best thank your lucky
ass software like this exists, because that is what is keeping these networks running,
the ability to quickly determine 'crime' and 'illegal foreign traffic' and shut it down
to help online business and e-commerce stay running

    e) china china china....over 50,000 chinese government employees working day and night
trying to bust into all facets of defense, government, and corporations to steal shit
-I directly know these things- they spend years for any and all angles of attack
    and social engineering...

    f) terrorists (duh)

    g) TOR ? laughable. no one is completely hidden when they use TOR. again, if you do not
personally own and manage -all- points in the network, you are trackable. period.

    ----------
    be concerned, maybe

    will it stop ? never

is it preventing an attack or compromise ? you bet your ass it does...thousands upon
thousands of attack both 'cyber' and 'physical' are being headed off constantly. no way is
    everything prevented
as everyone knows, no system is perfect and evil is around
every corner...but the ability to track activity -after- the fact and find relationships in
almost an instant is seriously the key here...to prevent further attacks from the same
    groups or like-minded crooks....
and learn how to do it better

and for those worrying this is like USSR or Nazi Germany, that is not possible in this day and age
because we have these global communications networks which are basically free thought and information,
citizens are more well informed than ever in history. Governments need to tiptoe around more than
ever, and informed citizens all have a voice and can express it globally in an instant. This is the
counter to pure government oppression. look at the happenings and change being demanded in the
eastern countries. people are fed up with their own governments and forcing change by any means...

look at what the recent NSA news has done, made it prime time news and experts are now commenting
on it all.....also note that the general informed consensus is: so what ? they have been doing this since the telegraph was invented
(only now the amount of data footprints is stupendously huge and impossible for any humans to decipher, hence the need
for powerful data storage and data mining operations)

What you really need to worry about is if the 'asteroid hits' or 'supervolcano' or whatever else...takes
out worldwide internet communications....and we truly go back to farming dirt and we loose global electronic
communications...this is the only way a government would be able to oppress the masses...if the citizens lose
    the connections to each other.

it is and has always been a system of checks and balances and no matter how hard you
complain, USA is still the best ever place to live and be free as possible. no lies, look around...
in the USA we can be pissed off about this NSA news and make it a subject for serious discussion
between political parties (which is what is happening now) so....believe it or not, the system is
    still working in our favor...

127.0.0.1 I will save the long quoting for sure here.

I don't doubt at all what happens. I have served in some sensitive areas in my military career, so I am not jaded to think it does not already exist. My point is where do we draw the line in what the government can and can't do with private citizens' data? If you require a warrant, then that is a good thing because it forces the government to prove that they have probably cause to obtain and use this information against those who DO break the law. If they can just arbitrarily gain the information and use it against private citizens, then we are losing what our country is supposed to be about: Power OF the people, not power OVER the people.

And if you truly think that this country can't get to the point of where the USSR and Germany were, you have your head in the sand sir, which I truly don't think you are. We are already taking the first steps towards it, and many people are allowing it to happen "for the protection of the people". The government uses that phrase to make everyone think that they are doing it for our own good. Just like they step in on other civil liberties because "it is for your own good". That is, for lack of a better term, Bullshit. It is about CONTROL and that is what the government is headed towards.

When I took my oath I took it willingly, and without lack of faith. I spoke the words, just like you did, to protect our country from all enemies, foreign and domestic. It is not my option to question my government. It is my DUTY to question it and to demand answers and equal protection for EVERYONE. Do I want this country to be safe for everyone? YES, of course. But at what cost? Where do we draw the line? Personally I think we drew the line a long time ago as a people, but the government soared over that line in the guise of "protecting you" from the bad guy, making each of us give up a little bit at a time so we don't really notice it.

Obviously I have an opinion here, and many may not share it, but the facts are there to support what I believe is going on. It is happening every day. Don't be blind to it.

Whats wrong with farming dirt ???? Ya'll youngins been brainwashed into thinking that life ends without iphones/smartphones/ipods/ sure technology allows me to type this right now but would my world end if it went away ? of course not, I can still farm /grow my own food/ raise some beef cattle & chickens, i grew up growing veggies & raising livestock for slaughter

technology made it easier (now days) but still very doable on a primitive scale (by todays standards)

Some flags and center console divider... lots of things on the wanted list.
I enjoy doing most of it the old ways. Be less lazy people if they had to grow their own food... or more dead people.

Not sure where this came from. I don't recall anyone saying anything about life ending without tech. We are referring to the governments rights to listen in on our phone conversations, read our email, and obtain any and all information that THEY deem worth of their interest, without due process.

I grew up farming and working hard and have no problem with that at all, but that is not the subject at hand here.

I don't know you, and you seem like a smart guy, this could be a great topic of debate but I'm going to stop you right here. Judging by your AF Avatar, this is an OPSEC issue and you need to stop.

DNA collecting roadblocks. Seems harmless since they're not mandatory. But once they become common, at what point will that change? Hell, I might have been taken in for further questioning because I'm still carrying a 50lb bag of fertilizer in the back of my Trooper. And a hammer, and a machete, and a lighter and a OMG a handgun.
