My 96 AC 5-lug came with 14x6 and would like to go up to 15" steel for better tire choices without going to aftermarket alloys. Don't want to lift, just go to a 225/70x15 from current 225/70x14.

I believe the diameter of the hub on first gen Taco's is larger than the second gen and will not fit. When I upgrade to xrunner wheels I sold my old ones and I had someone with an 80's toyota truck, gen 1 tacoma both try them and they didn't fit in the front. Not sure if his truck was modified at all though. =/

That makes sense, I'm afraid you're right. I haven't been able to find anyone, before now, who could tell me why 2nd gens won't fit! :)

Now I need to know if 01-04 5-lug 15x6 steelies will fit on my 96 5-lug. The factory wheel dealers list the 01-04 as only fitting 01-04 and not 96-00. Maybe the hub size changed to the smaller size in 01, while still in the 1st gen era?

i think i have the larger hubs so it seems i can't fit 2nd gen wheels on my 1st gen 5lug. been researching wheels but can't find correct offset/ backspacing.

No solution with Tacoma wheels I'm afraid. My solution was to go to the General Grabber AT2 27x8.50-14 on my stock 14x6s, instead of 15" aftermarket wheels, because I wanted to stay with hub centric steel wheels.

Mines a '07. I believe they have about a 45mm offset. Not sure about that though.

They are perfect for a 1st gen 5 lug. They are round, stay balanced, wear like iron, and grip like sports car tires. I also have them in load E LT245/75x16 on my Jeep Rubicon and they are great on snow/ice. And they are relatively cheap compared to other 1st line tires like BFG and GY. In the Jeep world, they have a reputation for strong sidewalls and are used for rock crawling. In fact one of the few criticisms I've heard is that they ride a little rough because of their two extra thick sidewall plies, which are 50% thicker than normal. They are also considered one of the best ATs for mud, although, of course, they don't clear out mud as good as a pure mud tire. I run 35 psi in the 27x8.5-14 and get 22-23 mpg from the 5 lug.
