Wanting more bass 1st Gen Xtra Cab

Hello all,

Right now my system is a Pioneer DEH-P8400BH and RF P165 Door Speakers up front running off the HU. Im wanting to put a 10 in. I am not really brand loyal, but I have heard great things about JL and everybody seems to have Kicker. Id like clear bass, but also Id like it to where I could hit hard. Also, if its possible, id like to run a few more watts to my speakers to make them sound better. Also I would probably get a box somewhat like this made for the 10.

Sundown audio sd-2's. I have two of them, and they play accurate and low. I'm feeding two subs 2400w even though they are rated for 500, and they take it like a champ. Another possibility when it comes to subs is the Alpine Type-R, but the basket on them is huge, so you'd have to make sure they fit your enclosure. As for an amp, something like a 5 channel may not have the juice to run the Sundown to it's full potential, so you may want to go with a 2 channel for the fronts, and a mono amp for the sub, something with 1000w or so.

 

Thanks man. I was thinking somewhere around 1k - 1200 to the sub. Ive heard read good things on here about Sundown also. Ill have to check the peak wattage for my speakers to see how much Id need for them. Just trying to get a idea of what ill need.

 

Whats the difference between 2 ohms and 4 ohms??? Im kinda a newbie to this stuff..

 

It's the amount of resistance the voice coil has. A dual 4 ohm voice coil can be wired to 2 or 8 ohms. A dual 2 ohm can be wired to 1 or 4 ohms. Consider this when buying the amp and sub, and be sure to get the right combination.

 

Which one would be a better choice? Should I pay the extra 35$ and get the 2 ohm sub?

EDIT: Which amp would yall recommend? I was thinking maybe around 1200 watts would be a good amount to put to the sub.

 

What amp do you have? Or are you going to pair it with a new amp you've spec'd out.

 

New amp. Im running the speakers straight off the radio, which is 50w. I was thinking around 1000 range maybe higher

 

A dual 2 ohm sub wired to 1 ohm running off this amp will be plenty for you.

And just so you know, you're probably getting around 12-15w from your deck, not 50. 50w is the peak wattage with one channel running. Anyways, a good 2 channel amp is up to you. Look for something with 100w or so and run wire straight from the amp to the door speakers. Don't use the factory wiring. The factory wiring runs through the factory crossover, and isn't of good quality. Feeding wire through the boot on the door is pretty easy, pop out one end, and use a wire tie taped to the wire to feed through the boot.

 

Ill prolly get a audio shop to hook it all up. So id need 2 different amps?

 

Yeah. The amp I posted is just for the sub, a monoblock. You'd still need a two channel to run the door speakers.

Alright... Gonna call my audio shop and see if they can order Sundown. Theyll prolly cut me a deal on the install if I buy from them.

 

Im thinking of maybe going with a JL w3 and from 500-800 watts and maybe a Mr. Marv box.

 

The JL W3 is a good sub. Just pulled one from my truck for something bigger, two Sundown SD-2 10"s. I've got an amp that will push the JL perfectly for sale if you're interested. It's an Alpine PDX-M6. Fits under the seat perfectly, is small, and puts out 640w on the birth sheet. I'm asking $250 Plus shipping.

The setup I had was a supercrewsound sub box with a W3 and this amp pushing it, and it pounded pretty good. I could get 120db out of it, but I wanted more, hence the Sundown gear. Let me know if your interested in the amp.

Instead of just getting seperate amps? Could I run my door speakers and sub off of one amp? Any suggestions

 

You can get a 5 channel amp, or a 4/3/2 amp from most companies. The 5 channel will probably put more power to the sub than a 4/3/2, but yes, that's a possibility.
