I'm guessing he works for the United States Air Force Airways. Just a hunch. :)

    Funny you say that.

I was on a plane from Memphis to Minneapolis and we were sitting at the gate for a long period of time. The Captain came on and told us they found a "nick" in one of the fan blades and they were going to try to "polish" it out. I'm sitting here thinking.... I think those blades are probably in pretty close tolerance and "polishing" them can't be good. And if the guys that they have working on it are anything like the guys we have working on our Fire Apparatus then I'm fucked. They started grinding on the blade and you could feel the entire plane vibrate from the grinding. I was sitting on the side of the plane being worked on so at least I would have a front row seat to the destruction when the engine disintegrated on take off.

I was a nervous wreck that flight.

It's amazing what we put our trust in and it is probably a good thing that we "don't" know some things.

    Replace the pan.
Use a new washer EVERY time (why wouldn't you after dropping $$ on M1 and a filter?!).
    Torque it.

What he said ^^ the price of the oil pan is not that bad, considering what the future might hold, always try to be on the safe side whenever possible.

I guess I'm not really an aircraft "mechanic" lol I am Electronic Warfare, the red-headed step child in the maintenance world. I'm definitely better with computers than mechanic stuff. The swap out will happen tomorrow, i'll take pics.

I retired USN about 20 years ago... The last air force plane I rode in was a C130 Prop Job.

They still use the C-130....A LOT. I'm sure it's changed a bit in 20 years though.

Finished replacing my oil pan in a little less than an hour. It was pretty easy. No gasket necessary just toyota brand RTV (pretty awesome stuff). The hardest part was cutting out the old sealant to release the old oil pan. I'm letting it dry right now before I put oil back in and leak check it.

I'll update as soon as I get the oil in and leak check it.

Won't you want the RTV on the inside of the bolts?

I was thinking the same thing. I usually put a bead clear around the bolt holes.
