Exhaust Question

(Yes, I did a search but cannot find what I want to know...)

I just purchased a 2009 double cab LB (coming from a 2001) and am surprised and a little dissapointed by the lack of sound from the exhaust. I dont really want to replace the whole system (catback), but what are the options to just replace the muffler?

From reading here, I think a sound close to the TRD exhaust is what I want. I dont want a loud exhaust, but I want to hear it when I press the pedal.

Also, are there any disadvantages to welding an after market exhaust on (premature rusting etc...)

Thanks for the quick reply, I am not really expecting a power gain, just want a little more noise.

 

Muffler will change your sound, but why not look into a full catback? I've been very happy with the TRD option, although that's just me.

maybe do surgery to the stock muffler?? Open her up, mod it and weld it back up.

 

The metal used on mufflers is ridiculously thin. very difficult to weld back together. Well possibly with oxy-acetylene.

 

Catbacks are way expensive, unless that's what you really want. As the guys said, welding in a muffler of your choice would be the best route to go.

 

This thread just made me realize I don't hear my truck when I drive it... all I hear is the fan, some valve ticking and road noise. kinda stupid. Making me miss my early 90's 4runner Rig I had a shop fab a flange from the Y pipe outward. 2.25" pipe, XYZ brand "muffler shop" muffler with side exit. No cat. best exhaust I ever had. Loved the sound. Great torque/power.

 

I just had a Magnaflow muffler welded in, added an AFE pro dry and removed the secondary air filter and I really like the way my truck sounds when I hit the gas pedal.

 

I don't want loud, does anyone know which exhaust (can) welded in, would best replicate the TRD exhaust system??

I don't think the Magnaflow I have is TOO loud. It's louder than the TRD but not by much. Generally, the larger size of the muffler, the lesser the volume. So, you could get a Magnaflow or whatever brand in a larger size than what I and others have and it will be less noisy. But you said you wanted noise so there are trade offs.

There's a multi page exhaust thread around here somewhere with all kinds of sound clips. Also, don't forget Youtube. Lots of exhaust clips on there.

 

Any highway drone with magnaflow welded in?
