    This.
If the extra 2 days for person A doesn't create an issue with C&D, then go with it.

I don't understand the problem op. As a senior enlisted this shouldnt even be a question for you. Person B is deploying, don't make things more stressful than they already are. Person A just needs to suck it up and realize somethimes being in the Military sucks, oh well.

If you can't live life and have fun, what's the point of existence? I feel no need to elaborate as clearly you don't understand.

I'd rather live than exist. Apparently some would rather raise post count. And thanks bro

When you're in the military, you can't just "quit" even if you have no family responsibilities.

Well... I guess you can, but not without serious repercussions that will follow you to your grave.

Whoever put in the time off should get it. If you don't like it, tough shit. Get your dates figured out earlier the next time around

id say suck it up and give them both the time off! if that is out of the question get person A to work those days. But really what happens if person A or B call in sick while the other is away.... or would they get in trouble for using a sick day?

i'm assuming they're in the airforce. unfortunately the military doesnt believe in sick days. if you're sick you have to have a piece of paper from a doctor the day of stating you're too sick to work that morning.
EDIT: and if they think you're faking you can get demoted for "malingering"

... While you're stuck in the unemployment line trying to explain the reason why you've had 7 jobs in the last four years was because they didn't give you what you want?

I could just as easily sit home and "live my life" and collect welfare. However, I choose to work and earn a living, so that when I do take time off (that I'm still being paid for), I can do nice things or have the things in life I want.

Sometimes life just isn't fair, and you don't get time off when you want. I'm in the National Guard, so every month I work a string of 12 consecutive, 8-hour days. Would I like to take an extra day off here or there? Sure, I would. And I'm usually able to. The only reason I wouldn't would be the exact scenario in the OP. So when I'm not able to, I don't take my ball and go home. I say, "Oh darn... I'll pick a different day."

Will I look back when I'm old and say, "I wish I would've worked more"? Hell no. But I will look back and say, "I'm glad I kept my employer happy so that I could have a job in a shitty economy and be able to build up a nice retirement fund."

I see where you're coming from and to a degree, I agree with you; when you're lying on your death bed you're not gonna be wishing you spent more time at work.

But, at some point, word gets around (it always does) that if you don't get your way, you'll quit. Or your resume is just a bunch of 'short' duration jobs which will raise red flags with hiring managers. Either way, you won't have a lot of luck finding new jobs unless you are really, really good at what you do-in which case you might become a golden child and have a long career at one or two places. So you need to learn to strike a balance or you'll be moving around the country a lot.

Back to the OP's question. All things being equal, first come; first served-if you change then you are no longer first. However, one guy's deploying and the other is not. Easy answer-guy that is deploying gets preference.

Since this is a military situation I will weigh in since I have seen similar things happen. I have had to piss off a few low rank people because they had conflicting dates submitted and I was the final decider.

    Order of vacation priority was:
Those on short-time, use or lose
    Those returning from deployment
    Those deploying
Those who had "critical jobs" where replacement was difficult
Those who had rank (Sorry, gunny gets vacation priority over private)
    Those who submitted request first

That is how we did it back then anyway. Again, it's never set in stone, and certain situations/conditions can always intervene.

The thing you both do not seem to realize is that this vacation time conflict is in the MILITARY. Now if you want to join up and then say you are going to "quit" if you can't get the vacation times you want, go right ahead and try it. You will get PLENTY of vacation time in military prison.

Should've never allowed the overlap of vacation days.

If vacation days have been put in - they're IN THE BOOKS. I wouldn't make a good boss (or company owner), because I would err on the side of the employees. Once the days are in the books - there's really no turning back. Telling an employee they have to change their vacation 'after the fact' is like asking seeing your workforce walk out the door on you.
Surely, you can ASK them to change - but most of the time, they have $$$ tied up in vacation plans, hotels, airfare, reservations and what-not.

That is why you never allow vacation overlap and design your policies accordingly.

We have good policies where I work, but somehow...the policies are voided when things get mysteriously changed 'in the books'. I will often get printed copies of my vacation time, so those 'mysterious' occurrences never happen to me.

Why are you so bent out of shape, bud?

I'm a skilled trades worker and there's lots of jobs available in the oils sands out my front door. Obviously a different story where you are. The only people on unemployment pay here are lazy people.
