My 08 taco RPM is running a little high when I start up the engien and Iam in "Park." The RPM doesn't come down in the normal range until I put it in "Drive" and drive around for awhile. Anyone knows why it's doing this. Thanks

Always at cold start up... so it sounds loud and dosen't calm down for along while aften driving. It has been doing this for the last two gas tanks. I have not done any mod on the engine, exhaust, or added any intake. I wanted to take it in for service sooner, but wanted to see if things would going to get back to normal. Iam thinking maybe it's the gas station I use(shell) close to my house. I pumped gas there the last two times(I don't want to accuse them of anything, but Iam just curious.) I gonna wait for one more tank and pump gas somewhere else to see if there are any changes.

Unless its over 2k rpm, its normal. Electric choke is an automatic function on EFI engines that changes the air/fuel ratio on startup so that the engine runs smooth. You know how if you start a weed-eater and you have to choke it or it wont start? Same idea. When your truck starts cold, the choke automatically kicks in because the computer tells it to. At the same time it tells the engine to rev higher (usually in the 1500 RPM range) until it warms up. Your fan will clutch in as well. I would have been more worried if it hasn't been doing this until now. Usually it will calm down after you get on the road for a minute. Typically the fan clutches out for me by the time I hit second gear.

Now if its revving higher than 2 grand, you might have an issue.

yeah all efi cars rev higher when they first start up each day...once it starts to warm up the revs slowly fall to just under 1000k on most cars and trucks

This thread is awesome...I love it here.:) I was just getting a little concern since my taco didn't started doing that until a week ago. I relized that the engine had to warm up a bit at cold start before the RPM would come down to normal range, but it seems like the RPM was going a little higher then normal and it took a bit longer to back get normal range. Thanks guys

If you can, get a ScanGauge and run with that. You can monitor engine temperature as it warms up to operating temp and watch when your engine switches from open loop to closed loop condition. (includes O2 sensor input to ECU)
