I don't know, he is too off and on for me. Carries puck in, then too many times doesn't take the shot, or just passes it to either no one or the other team. I don't think of him as a "star" player.

 

A lot of Russian 'stars' suffers from inconsistency. While I agree he is overpaid, you can't just let him walk or trade him for a draft pick at the deadline. He needs some coaching perhaps, but there is no denying he is immensely talented. I went to see the Pens when the were in Winnipeg, and he was clearly the guy who appeared capable of taking over the game.

 

Good thing we had that lockout to get salaries and long term contracts in check

 

With a lot of coaching he could be great. He has loads of talent but he also doesn't seem to always keep his head in the game or he gives an beer league effort. When he decides to play he is great but other times I could go either way on him. I would think for 9.5mil a year increased consistency would be something demanded.

 

Oh, no doubt he has the talent to be great, but so far, no coach has been able to harness it. Sometimes I'm amazed at how he carries the puck down the ice. It's unacceptable to me to be that inconsistent, a off day or two or even three here or there is one thing, but making that kinda of scratch, I would expect performance.

Malkin's been inconsistent ever since Alyonka Larionov left town in 2010 or whatever. They used to 'hang out' ALL the time. There's a hilarious 'cooking with Malkin' skit they did in the summer of 2009 I believe.

 

Malkin will never lead the Penguins to win the cup. No Russian ever has. I have little reason one ever will. It can be whatever you call it. Until it happens it hasn't happened. I will take Callahan ahead of Malkin, but not ahead of Crosby. Russians are support players at best. History has proven this. Your half ass commentary does nothing to change it.

I never said anything about russians leading anything. we were discussing russians consistency after long term deals.

I wasn't speaking of it in terms relative to contracts. I was speaking generally. North American and even Swedish players have more often shown to be consistent performers. Leading a team is a show of consistency. More specifically, leading a team to 16 post season wins in two months takes a nearly unfathomable effort. The knock on Russian "stars" is their streaky or inconsistent effort. Yeah, this observation is nothing new, but the present hasn't yet shown something different. Winning will be the ultimate proof. Russia has been a hockey powerhouse since the beginning, their players should be leading teams to Stanley Cup victories. We are talking about consistency, so I am considering the pinnacle of it relative to the NHL.
