The key word was 'averaging'. To average 62 or 63 on a trip like that, you have to haul ass. I have a good half hour at the end of the trip that's all slow backroads, then take into account stopping for tolls and fuel.

 

Do you get flag day off ?

 

Discretion is a good and bad thing. Good when you get to have it, bad b/c it's so hard to have it. I have banged my head on it in the league too, seems you have to make a rule for every scenario because people will just assume rather than asking questions or god forbid reading the rules and regs in every captain's kit. I guess we really make those up to waste ink and chop down a tree.

 

C'mon, Coasties aren't even allowed to sleep! Talibanners might sail a WMD into the harbor, then we'd all be up shits creek without a paddle.

 

I get Monday off I wasn't sure if other company's gave the day off .

 

Over the years we've been able to make a few cases go a little more leniently on the soldier, but they always end up getting kicked out. The year or two after a deployment is always the worst for *adverse* administrative actions.

 

The stop for tolls isn't that bad, but the fuel and your slow back end of it hurts for sure. I'm guessing you had it around 72 on the highway most of the time.

 

Maybe it's like when my sister went away to school..just had all this freedom and didn't use it properly?

Not so much. Soldiers come back from deployment carrying some baggage, they've got fattened bank accounts, and sometimes they do not transition back into civilian life as well as they could.

 

Yes, especially the $$. My nephew came back from his deployments with a load of cash every time waiting for him..he just bought himself a nice car or his motorcycle and banked the rest. He and his girlfriend bought a house last year and he sold the bike to help with the down payment..that poor girl, moves from Alabama to RI to be with him and not 3 months after the move he gets deployed for nearly a year..

 

Happy flag day. What does that mean? We just put flags out for our service men?

 

Yeah, it's not always the most fun or convenient. Sounds like he's got a good head on his shoulders. Now that I've got a son I would like to stay home as much as possible, but I expect there will be at least one more deployment before I retire.

Haha. He well likely learn himself. I wish Alex all the best, and it would be great if he stayed with her throughout college and after. But, the statistics ate mouth in his favor. I had a few friends with high school sweethearts or whatever in college, people they had been with over a year prior to college. Only one couple made it through and are married now out of my 4 friends.

That's a long time to be with someone when you're young, and will be extremely taxing for both of you. You will feel like, and probably will, miss our on a lot of the "college experience" if you're committed through college. Harsh, but that's the truth. Again I wish you the best, and if you stay together awesome, but the stats are not in your favor.

Worst thing you could do is look back 10-15 years from now with regrets .
