    Is it a 7.62 or 5.45 upper? Just curious, I didn't know AA made a 7.62.

Is the action still gritty at all? All new guns feel gritty at first until the surfaces wear in. Since it's a piston gun, you can use pretty much any slippery grease you want since you will get almost zero fouling or heat in the receiver to break it down or contaminate it. In the 1.5 years or so that I had my AA upper I cleaned and re-lubed it once. Piston guns are great in that regard.

I used Militec-1 grease in mine. It is absolutely the best lube I've ever used. People who use Slip2000 and Frog Lube religiously are always marvelling at how smooth the action is on my guns.
I'm trying to remember what else I did to keep it running so nicely, but I honeslty don't remember ever having any problems with it.

Stuff like this is always easier to diagnose in person.

It could be a lot of things, but weak Russian ammo is a pretty common problem with Russian caliber AR's. That's where I would start. If you shoot hot ammo side by side with weak ammo, you can tell the difference right away.

Only problem with trying a different carrier is that if it's an AA upper, it has a proprietary carrier and not easy to come by unless you know someone with an AA upper.

Anyone on here shoot out at the rockpile (just south of may wood gun club in corona). I saw some guys shooting out of the back of a taco last time up there.

It's an AR-15 Performance (ARP) upper with an Adams Arms piston system.

Action is still kinda gritty, It still needs to be broken in a lot I think

Yea I just ordered some Fiocchi and some other ammo to see if it shoots differently.

I shoot near the rockpile in Lucerne Valley, dont think it's the same place

It's open again and being kept clean. Closely monitored too but the LEO who keeps an eye on the place is cool. Never bothers anyone.

Oh, you converted it? That's probably the root of your problem right there. I don't think Adams Arms makes a x39 upper for various reasons. x39 is a notoriously finnicky round in the AR platform. You typically need to run either a really short gas sytem and/or open up the gas port to make it run reliably. and Adams Arms uppers/systems are known to not run weak ammo very well with a standard size gas port.
And I COULD be totally wrong here, but I could have sworn you would need to use dedicated x39 mags and possibly even a dedicated x39 lower that accommodates the bigger curve of the mag. Maybe someone else with more knowledge can chime in here.

    Here are some images.

    I don't know that I've ever seen 7.62x39 work out of a 5.56/.223 mag.

I hope I'm not compounding the issue, but these are just some of the issues I've read about and witnessed in the past, and that's with DI guns.

Edit: I just looked at the pic of your gun. The midlength gas system is definitely part of the problem combined with it being a piston. I'm pretty sure you need to be running a shorter gas system.

So there are some things to look into. Gas system length/weight and mags. But again, without seeing the thing work/fail in person, it's all just speculation.

Oh nice. good to hear. Hidden valley was shut down months ago and may never be back. It's a completely private range, too, but one of the groups that rented it on a regular basis began bringing way too many people in and ruined it for the regulars. Total bummer.

The x39 ARP barrels run great with the mid length gas as Harrison has the port tuned correctly. He only stopped making them as the parts for the bolts were such a PITA to get. They were very problem free actually. As for the rest of what's going on, got me I don't have much experience with that round.

Over on the 458 SOCOM side we ran into similar issues. Carbine, mid-length or rifle length gas systems work just fine for the high pressure 5.56mm round but if you couple a larger bore such as the 458 SC with a mid-length gas system, it will only function correctly if "certain" powders are used. We get our fastest velocities with powders like H110 or 2400 but these will not work the 458 SC with a mid-length gas system, at all. It fires good, just short strokes and the case dribbles out on to the table. Use Reloader 7 powder or IMR4198 and everything works just fine. Ejection 8-12 feet every time.

I would also highly recommend the 39mm magazines if and when you can find some. Those cases need that large curved magazine to feed correctly.

I did not do my research very well and purchased a mid-length gas system 458 SOCOM rifle February of 2012. Factory ammo with H110 powder failed miserably but other factory rounds with the slower powder worked just fine. I reload so this is not a big deal to me, just use RL7 powder and all is well. I know you want to use run of the mill AK steel cased rounds so not sure how you will get past that gas system to get the rifle to run right. Keep us informed as to the progress you make with it. KYPD too! :)

Wow, I wouldn't have thought 4198 would work well with a bigger bore. I just finished up 8lbs of that stuff and was having to load 2+ grains over book with a 68 grain bullet just to make it cycle reliably in a MK12 upper. It was super accurate, though!

Bitchin, man. There is nothing sexier than a plain jane M4 carbine. All business. Of all the AR's I have, my favorite is still my LMT 14.5" M4.

Yep. Here's mine before I put the ACOG on it. I wish I could say I shoot better with irons, but those days are gone. And the ACOG is as indestructable as the gun itself, so that's not an issue.

I have a PSA M4 clone. I prefer my Arsenak SGL AK-74 clone all day long.

Now if I could only freaking buy ammo again.
