The automaker hasn’t offered one since the Scrambler in 1986, but there are indications such a model could return to the lineup when the next generation Wrangler is introduced in a couple of years

May have another mid sized truck on the market sometime soon....

It would have the Lockers front and rear, solid axle plus a truck bed.
May even had a diesel if that transfers over.

It would be cool to have a Taco, with Diesel, two lockers, and solid axles.... Stock...

It won't even compete with the Tacoma market in any way, shape or form and here's why:

"Prices are $29,999 for the DC250 and $39,999 for the DC350 on top of the donor vehicle, but it’s definitely a “you get what you pay for” proposition."

You'll be into it for $80k by the time all is said and done. That kit has been around for a while now and hasn't impacted Tacoma sales yet.

EDIT: Gelo beat me to it.

I can only think of one person foolish enough to consider a Wrangler over a Tacoma.

    You are missing the point.

That is what it is now, Custom, but in two years Jeep will look at adding it as a normal Jeep line just like the Rubicon. In the Rubicon package.

Sure it may not have the big lift or 37" tires but it will be in the normal line up.

There was a 2 door advertised locally in NorCal for $39,900. Been sitting on the lot for 9 months.

There will eventually be a new Tacoma anyway. I would be surprised if they built it to copy a jeep. The average Tacoma driver around here certainly isn't wheeling. I can't speak for all regions however.

No one really said to copy Jeep, but maybe they could build a real off road package and offer something with a good locker or posi front and rear, maybe have a little fender room for an upsize tire and not need a lift.

I bet that the number of Jeeps out there, the average person does not wheel them.....
Just like a Z28, vette or Viper, the owner on average, does not race them...

I heard somewhere that Jeep will be making a mid size truck in the near future that would be in the tacoma price range. It may be just rumors though.

Won't be in the lineup, Jeep has no need to put a truck in their lineup, and Chrysler wouldn't allow is as to not take sales away from Ram. Same reason Ford hasn't updated the Ranger, they want people to buy the F150.

I think you're underrating the Taco. I've been majorly impressed with this truck off road -stock. Yes, it's great to be above average here. As far as comparing to the Jeep, the Taco is every bit as off road capable as a stock Jeep. You can afford a really nice lift for the difference in price between a very nice Taco and a Rubi to make room for those larger tires. Front lockers are the most overrated of off road add ons. I've used mine three times in six years and I only really needed it once. This includes wheeling Moab, southwestern, northern and central CO.

As far as OP's question, the Jeep world has been screaming for a truck for as many years as I've been involved with them. Rumors always circulate about them -much like the new 2014 Taco. I'll bet Ram comes out with a new mid size before Jeep does.
