Brighter tail light options

Just the bulbs that'll fit in my stock 04 oem tail lights.
Just curious if anyone can recommend a company or a certain type of light. Maybe led's?
Should have my rear plate bumper w/ tire carrier the end of the month and it has rear quarter panel protection that slightly hides the brake and bckup lights.

I added elcheapo 18 wheeler led's to my bumper for the dark nights backing up trails. they are just enough to light everything up without blinding people in parking lots and draw so little current I spliced them right into each reverse light wire.



used a grinder









cost me about $45 for the whole project. I cracked one over a year ago and while it's taking on moisture it still works great to this day.

My bumper actually has R.I. Diffused D2's in the light buckets. That're gonna be used as offroad bckup up lights only. They're over 6000 lumens, I'm interested in just brighter backups and brake lights in the stock tail lights. Used for on the road. Don't really want to un-necessarily blind people.

 

Where did you pick up those leds? I am looking for a 3" set to go in my bumper

Funny you mention this thread, I JUST changed out my tail lights to LED bulbs because I'm on hill country roads that tend to get a lot of fog in the early morning and most of the roads don't have any lighting. So I just changed the rear brake lights to some Red LED bulbs and man what a difference. Not only are they super bright, they give the truck a really modern look, all for $20 bucks.

Probably the best $20 bucks I've spent on the truck.

LOL, nevermind, I saw their search tool. Going to be buying some lighting it looks like.

 

I lov my LEDs they r bright but not to bright. i got the rear brake bulbs, 3rd brake light, reverse bulbs, cornerlights, dome light, the two map lights. and working on the guage cluser next. they all look great dont have a picture yet though just finished them a few days ago. their service is great quick and easy. prices are good too

I just got mine earlier today. Got the brightest backups and tail brake lights that their search function said fit my 04.

Reverse lights are whiter. Not a whole lot brighter. Definately not bright enough to justify $17 a piece for.

And the brake/tail lights didn't fit. One snapped it's grounding soidering points just pushing it in the socket.

I'll try and get some night pictures with the model # and part info. That way you know they work and fit. That's one of the things I hate the most about changing to LEDs or ordering bulbs in general online is sometimes they fit, other times they don't.

Has anyone seen LED replacement lights at any local auto parts stores?

 

Just a little bit of information for those looking at LED lights. A little research goes a long way. One of the many things to look at with LED conversions are the type and style of LEDs. For example 3528 LEDs are not as bright as the 5050 LEDs. So when looking at LED bulbs like this: 1157 led You can tell these are the brighter 5050 LEDs. Also, if you notice it says "CAN bus" which means if you have one of those intelligent cars that have a warning message that comes up on the dash like "Left Brake Bulb Out", then those are the ones you for SURE want to use. Since the OP has a 1st gen, there is no need for spending the $$$ on any of the "CAN bus" LEDs. I have personally installed and looked at almost every single style of LED bulb out there and I do not recommend anything other than the SMD 5050 LED type bulbs for turn signals, brake lights, or parking lights.

One other VERY important thing: Turn signal hyper-flash. You know what I mean, when you have a burned out bulb so the turn signal flashes like a bulb on crack. When you install LEDs for your turn signals they always say use the load resistors. I say throw the load resistor in the trash. They get VERY hot, and while they do work, getting the proper LED relay is the best way to go. OP, your truck shows to be a 2004 Tacoma so you will need to be sure you get the correct one. My 97 for instance is a 1st gen, and uses the CF13GL-02, instead of the CF13JL-02, which is the one listed for "Japanese" cars/trucks. The difference between the two relays is which terminal is the battery one, and which terminal is the control. The wrong relay will simply not work, and at $13 per relay, you don't want to get this wrong. The best thing to do is the remove your relay and match it up with the correct relay that they sell.
