According to Toyota this is the max payload for SB/LB 4x4 2009's.
    Maximum Payload (Lbs)1320/1260

Why would I buy a bigger truck that can carry less weight? I'm not buying a truck to carry pillows. I bought a truck to carry heavy things I wouldn't put in my car. Now if the LB was 12 longer AND had, say, 100lbs more capacity than the SB then maybe. But bigger bed + lower weight rating = more easily over loaded truck.

Not everthing that is larger/longer is heavier. Sometimes it's just nice to have the extra space. That 60# doesn't mean much. Bottom line is most are going to defend their decisions, LB or SB. They're all sweet...

honestly i won't diss ya whether you have a short bed or not, at the texas meet i was the only long bed until tacomanchach showed up at the end. A taco owner is cool either way, i just think the long bed looks more like a complete truck than the short bed.

It's ok. I just don't get why toyota didn't beef up the LB a bit more. ok, so it's only 60LBS less than the SB, but still! If I get a truck with a longer bed my first thought is I can cram more stuff in it! (dirt, mulch, wood pellets, etc) Unfortunately, that larger opening means I could be over loading the truck without realizing it (I would have to stop a couple bags of pellets shy of what I put in a SB, but would still have more room left). How hard would it have been for toyota to make some design tweaks and have the LB carry 100-200lbs more than the SB to make up for that?

Simple fix, don't go stock :D I got an add-a-leaf and billie's in the back, and honestly i didn't notice any "overload" on the ruck before and still don't. In fact I feel a sense of pride when i haul something to show those ford, dodge, and chevy guys what a taco can do.

good point. You wont really be able to appreciate it until you get a lift or additional leafs to hold on that extra weight.

I got the short box so I would have the nicer turning radius. And man is it a very nice turn radius.

^ I think that would be a minimal difference. My lb has an awesome turning radius too

That extra foot of length is put right in the middle of the drivetrain. So it definitely affects the radius.

It's still a lot better than most trucks out there, the short box and ranger i believe are the only ones that might be shorter, but not by much. I steal parking slots from Rams, Silvers, and F150's all the time.

Oh Im sure its better than most. I got the short box since I didnt want something I couldnt fit into the garage, and I wanted the nice turn radius. Had I a larger garage to park in, I might have gone for the long box though - who knows!

I started thinking there was a reason they don't make a LB in the Offroad trim line. I like being able to turn nearly as tight as a car and still be able haul everything *I* need in the bed or tow full sized trucks if needed. The car-like turn radius comes in handy on the trails I take since they seemed to be suspiciously ATV sized. :D Makes it a lot easier to get around trees and tight trails without having to back up all the time.

The reason they didnt make an offroad in the lb is because there was some kind of hardware conflict between the rear locker and the lb.

Being a carpenter , I actually use my truck for a truck. I think both beds are kinda short. I have an access cab w/long bed and a tool box, makes for a fairly short box. That's why I own a trailer. Long bed, my ass. They should call 'em what they are. Short bed and even shorter bed. The difference between a 6' and 5' bed just isn't enough to worry about. Go for what you think looks best and get a trailer for hauling the long stuff. Short beds have always looked better than long beds unless short gets too short like those F*rd Exploder Sport things.

Yeah, I saw that too. They also proved driving with the tailgate CLOSED is more efficient than OPEN--Contrary to popular belief.

And I'm sure it has nothing to do with turn radius and break-over angle. I'm sure they could've tweaked the locker to work if they needed too. The two trucks can't be all *that* different. I mean, same engine, same auto tranny, same tow capacity, same GVWR (5450lbs).... Basically identical specs in SB vs LB autos except for 35lbs more payload with the SB, and the overall length and turn radius being shorter on the SB.

So what's the problem? Having a longer driveshaft? I mean, I would assume they'd use the same rear axle since damn near everything else in the truck is the same.....

I guarantee that they would have to tweak out the rear locker to make it work in the lb buuutttt that would involve alot more costs in the production line. Alot cheaper for them to just not do it in the first place
