I agree with you there. All of mine are open and can be easily checked for leaks. What I do like about them is the Pex pipe because you can bend it, just like pulling wire so literally, no joints!

So... what do you use for fittings with Pex pipe? The crimp on ones?!?!

Just got it, sorry, been crazy busy today. I did find carpenter ants just outside the house

Just replaced a dead light switch. This thing must be much older than I am!

Ever see the switches that are 2 buttons? One for on, push the other for off? Those things are older than you. That switch doesn't look too bad, you might be older than it.

 

My last apartment had a bunch of those.

 

Do you have knob and tube wiring?

 

Dunno. Seems all the wiring is just brown, positive and negative only, no ground.

 

Knob and tube keeps the wires separate, you'd see knobs like this in your attic and basement:

 

I don't remember at the moment. I don't have a circuit breaker, just a box full of the old plug fuses and cartridge fuses.

Pex is great. We used the stretch compression fittings onto barbed bronze: you slide a special plastic band over the end you are affixing to the barbed fitting, slide in the expansion tool, stretch it out, pull the tool out and slide the pex over the fitting as fast as possible. So, you've got a manifold set up with shutoff valves and barbed fittings (all traditional copper). Run your pex all over the house, then transition back to copper in the wall where your fixture is. It makes domestic water supply a dream to run.

Rewire your house before it burns down. Seriously. Nothing in your house is grounded. If the wiring is as old as the fuse box the wiring itself is tired, and the insulation is more than likely worthless. And I'd hate to see the years of splicing and patchwork that has happened over time.

 

Hoping to move out before that happens. I'm surprised this place hasn't fallen over yet.
