Engine dies if truck rolls backward

I've got a 2009 Tacoma 4wd, double cab, TRD, and SR5. I have a VERY steep driveway....if I stop half way up, and then take my foot off the brake, the truck will roll backwards and the engine dies immediately....EVERY TIME. I understand the truck beginning to roll backwards if I'm not giving it enough gas to go up the hill....by why is the dang engine stalling??

By the way....this is my first Toyota Truck. I like it so far....but other than the stalling problem, the stereo is intermittent (might turn ITSELF on OR off...and if it's off sometimes there is gibberish on the stereo display.

 

That happened in my Civic all the time.

 

I believe it works on the same principal as a manual if the hill is that steep. The engine is trying to put out enough power to keep it going, but can't at an idle so it stalls.

Have you tried not taking your foot off the brake? Seems like that would solve the problem

 

You must have an auto. Yeah going up the slippery boat ramp what works best is if you use both the gas and brake, but obviously not too much of either.

 

Yeah...DUH....I should have stated that it is a automatic transmission....sorry.

 

I doubt this but if you driveway is dirt you could put it in 4low. Haha.

 

yeah soon as you let off the brake you gotta give it gas...or put it in reverse if you are backing out

Sorry this is off topic. Do you have any pics of the 88 truck you had. I love the old yota pickups. I'm a big fan of the one in back to the future.

 

Well I'll be darned....I never had an automatic do that before. I'd be curious if other folks trucks do the same thing.

 

i've never had an automatic...but i've never experienced that driving my moms accord or anything...but i always give it gas soon as i let off the brake...i never tried only letting off the brake and rolling backwards unless i was in reverse....lol

i have one pic of my old truck but i don't have a scanner so i can't get it on my computer....i might could take a pic of my pic but i dunno how it will turn out...lol

ok i did it here it is...lol...if you notice my brother's old 1984 nissan 300zx is behind it...that car was awesome too...both vehicles lasted past 300,000 miles...my truck had 15x10 wheels and 31x10.50 tires....notice how back then the front wheel well had more room than the rear...nowadays it's totally opposite...maybe for better aerodynamics, handling, or better gas mileage...not sure

 

I love those 80s Toyota 4x4s. That's what got me hooked on them ever since.

 

300,000!! That's quite a distance. I bet that 22re is still kicking today if it hasn't been abandoned.

 

yeah the 80s is the time when these trucks started becoming real popular for their looks and reliability of the 22re engine....yeah i wouldn't be surprised if that thing is still driving around...only problem is it started leaking/burning oil....i was adding a little oil every now and then for like the last 100,000 miles i put on it...lol....that's why i finally got rid of it cuz i didn't have the money to rebuild the engine or anything back then...it still ran perfectly though...prolly just needed new piston rings and engine gaskets and it would've been fine...and all the ball joints and stuff were wore out...wouldn't even hold any grease anymore...lol

 

Mine has never EVER stalled on steep hills. I used to live on one. Thats strange. That (to me) means the torque converter is locking up when it shouldn't be. Something doesn't sound right.

it will still die. Yesterday in the trail going up a very steep hill when starting to roll backwards the engine died, it did the same on the other current gen that was with us.

 

mAN MUST BE AN 09 THING i've climb and stopped on hills that it felt like a shuttle launch with the grade. As for your radio issue sounds like a trip to the dealer is in order.
