Switched from 87 octane to 91

    I am getting better gas mileage, about 1.5-2 mpg. But I am feeling a little more kick in my truck. Question is will the power gain from high test gas be noticeable or is it in my head? And also is there any other pluses for running 91 octane?

    I had a '99 Xtra Cab PreRunner SR5 V6
    It's noticeable from what I've heard. IIRC the manual states to use 91 octane for maximum performance.

    It is dyno-proven to give our trucks more power. As chris4x4 has attemped to explain to me a few times (except I am not-clinically-diagnosed ADD so take this with a grain of salt):

    Our trucks are basically high compression engines, so they perform better with the higher octanes.

    From what I heard the 91 octane doesn't have the ethanol crap in it.

    depends where you live. Here in VA, the gas companies that use ethanol run it in every fuel grade. However Chevron does not run it in any of their fuel grades

    No 91 around here, so I switched to 93 after the free tank of 87 from the dealer was gone.

    She's on her second tank of it now. Engine seems happier and strangely enough the exhaust tones changed to a smoother sound.

    Mileage doesn't seem to be much different, but I'm more concerned about power output and engine health.

    I have a 4 banger and now i never have to downshift on the interstate with 93. I also get a few extra MPGs so all is well

    ive been running 89 in my truck since i got it. just curious what kinda miles are you guys gettin outta a full tank? think im averagin around 280-240

    I usually get around 350-400(4 cyl) and I try to fill at 1/4 tank

    That's what I'm shooting for with the 91, but wasn't sure if it made a difference.

    On 87 I was getting around 350 per tank. My truck wasn't lifted at that time with a toolbox full of tools and running stock tires.

    The way I know the more power is not just in my head is when I didn't have to downshift ever going home from school. I was fully loaded and usually on 5 or 6 hills along the 300 mile trip I would have to downshift.

    I never did once, just sat in 5th for 4 hours and got 27.6 mpg :D

    i filled it up with 91 just for laughs once and i frogot to measure my milage, but im pretty sure i felt better performance

    Meh, not gonna happen, but for as much power as it puts out for a V6 (many previous gen V8 engines made ~240hp and only slightly more lbft torque than the 4.0) it still gets excellent mileage. With the TRD Cat-Back and CAI plus running 93 octane, I guesstimate I'm getting around 245-250hp and probably over 280 lbft of torque. Those are damn good numbers for a sixer with that kind of mileage.


    I do wish Toyota would take a page from Dodge's playbook with the Dakota though and offer the 4.7L V8 in the Tacoma. That would make for a seriously sick truck.

    I don't think I noticed an improvement in power but my MPG went up 1 or so.

    I should take notice in how much miles I can go on my Taco. I use my SG to read out my MPG, I think I should make one of the commands read my total miles driven.

    I get about 23-24 MPG, I normal put in about 17 gallons of gas (when gas light is on). Here is my estimation:

    23 (MPG) X 17 (Gallons) = 391 miles
    24 (MPG) X 17 (Gallons) = 408 miles

    So I can about ~400 miles on my tank. BTW, I use 87.

    im running a 4.0 with auto trans and always put in highest octane i can get think its 93 here in GA. I get 26 highway and around 20 city... great power too... got on it pretty good entering highway and pulled away from an BMW M3... gotta love the Tacoma 4.0
