Ubolts under torqued

Dude, theres absolutely nothing wrong with that, & you're right it should be part of any maintenance.. I almost always spend an hour or 2 under my truck after a long day of trails, checking out old dings & new ones & ALWAYS with a grease gun to hit the zirks...

 

Front drive shaft is a bitch to grease with the skids on so I just drop it every 10K...

 

Honestly... When i grease them after 10K they still don't really need it that much. Just preventative maintenance.

 

Exactly, to the best of my knowledge my U joints are original with 192,000

& they're still great

OP.. Thanks for bringing this up. I have an 07 that had the springs TSB done in
09. I checked the torque on the 19 mm nuts on my u bolts and they were @
70 ish . The TSB was done at the dealer in Kearny Mesa. Seems like somebody was either dyslexic or knew what they were doing.

 

Was gonna post that my Tacoma was assembled at NUMMI,
but read the post above and realized I had also had the Leaf Spring TSB done.
So ditto the dyslexia or knowledge at my dealership

HA! good to hear at least 1 local dealership is using common sense ! & I'm sure there are others, the shocking thing for me that prompted this thread was the fact that they were rolling off the assembly line like this, & theres a few here that still think 37ft.lbs is perfectly fine....amazing...

Ok so from what I am understanding is that we still don't know if 37 ft lbs. is correct ? I did check mine and they were loss. I torque them to 40 ft. lbs for now. I was afraid of going to 75 or even 80 ft. lbs of torque out of fear of snapping or stripping out the bolt.

 

Lol dude, you won't snap the bolt with just a wrench. Trust me, 37 lbs of torque is NOTHING! That's barely above hand tight. The fact that these bolts are staying on and not vibrating off on the first couple thousand miles astounds me.

 

This is another reason why I am reluctant to torque them to 75 or 80 ft,lbs I have had bad conseques do to over tightening bolts. I do agree that 37# is kind of low but Iam not a Toyota factory tech.

 

I torqued mine to 73 when the truck was 2 weeks old, they are fine. 80 to 90 is probably even more correct.

Little under tightened them a little will check torque when wrench is available

 

Thanks guys for all the reply's . One more question to those how had the TSB done. Did they replace your u bolts or use the old ones? Again thanks in advances.

 

Brand new 2013 SR5 Access Cab checking in. Assembled in Texas, for what it's worth.

I just checked mine, and each nut turned about a 1.25 turns before clicking with the wrench set at 75 ft-lbs. I alternated each nut with .25 turn to keep the force relatively evenly spread; thread count differed by about one thread on some of the Ubolts. Hopefully that's close enough? My first time dealing with U Bolts...

I took it for a quick test drive, no real change in things, maybe a slightly perceived tighter suspension, but that could be entirely mental.

Either way, there ya go, still under torqued coming out of the factory at this point and time.
