I can't let the wife know
Hey guys,1st thread.I had my truck for about 6months. Its an 06 extended cab v6 manual 4x4. Took it today off roading for the first time. When I would put in on 4low it would make a griding noise. Not every time but it did it a couple of times then 4L would kick in. Some times the dash would beep to let me know its on 4low but at times when it was on 4low it wouldnt beep.Is this normal? Before i put it into 4h or 4l i would make sure im in a complete stop and clutch in.Is this right?

If it was beeping you were not in 4Lo. If the light comes on and stays on you are engaged...Other wise it still is in 4Hi

It sounds like you have the engaging technique down from what I remember...

don't know on the manuals but i know that you need to put it in neutral on the autos. Just confirming what Brunes said if it's blinking and you hear beeping it's not engaged.

i hate the 4lo in my truck, ive used it twice, and both times it takes forever to get it out of 4lo. i was driving mtn. roads after climbing a hill and tried to take it out of 4lo and all it would do is beep at me, meaning its still in 4lo.
i was worried since i was about 30 miles from my house and in 6th gear i can only do about 40, eventually after trying to do rolling to get it out, high reving, reversing you name it i did it. i eventually unplugged the harness on the transfer case, turned off my truck then plugged everything back in. turned my truck on and then went from 4lo to 4hi and it finally popped out.

    pisses me off haha

Not to sound like a dick, but this is very thoroughly covered in the owners manual.

With manual transmission, you have to make sure the truck is at a dead stop and the clutch is all the way to the floor, or else it will beep meaning it has not engaged into 4WL. It is the same when putting it into 4WL and taking it out

Just make sure you push the clutch all the way to the floor, have the shifter in neutral and the truck is at a dead stop.

I had the same problem and it took me a few minutes to realize that since the clutch engages so far out, I never push the pedal all the way down. I would leave about half an inch of travel on the clutch pedal even when I thought it was fully depressed lol

I had the same problem but the more I used it the easier it got to get out of 4lo. When it beeps I just turn the truck off for about 30sec then start it and its fine.

I had the same problem at first. I was used to the shifter and locking hubs because my last truck was a '94 Toyota. When I got my '05 I had trouble putting it in 4LO but on the visor there's a piece of paper. I read over it and it goes right into 4LO no problem.

I have had mine in the shop because engaging and disengaging 4Lo was and is is a joke

When I took it in the Service writer couldn't get it to work either and then all of a sudden the service manager comes along and claims we weren't pressing in the clutch far enough an even printed off a page from the owners manual.

I laughed and opened the door for him and said "show me"

He gave up after the 11th twist of the knob and me telling him push harder the floorboards are still above the frame dude every time it started beeping

They had a guy work on it for a bit and claim it is is fine now but it still takes many times and several prayers for the piece of shit system to work
