I have the 6spd manual trans on my Taco. Today I went to park on a hill, turned off the truck and put it in first. I felt the truck roll for a second and stop. Felt like the clutch slipped and then grabbed. Later on I went for a drive and parked on a steaper hill, shut off the truck and put it in first. The truck rolled a few inches and stopped, then rolled a few then stopped, and so on....

Is my clutch going bad? I have just under 14,000 miles on it. Other than that it seems to drive normally.

So you're relying on your clutch as a park brake?

Most of the people I've seen with a manual trans do that too. Can't always use the e-brake, especially in winter. I've seen people set their e-brake and it gets frozen like that.

How far will it roll in Neutral?

J/k Use the parking brake always! Enjoy your truck it's not broken.

Ok, so just to be clear:

I shouldn't be worried the clutch can't support the truck when parked? And that I should always be using my E-brake, even with the chance it could freeze while engaged? (I've seen it happen to Mustangs mostly)

Never had this issue with my Trans Am. That's why I'm asking.

Edit: Not saying anyone here is wrong, but I used to use the E-brake all the time, and quite a few people have told me not to...

Do NOT use your engine for a parking brake, esp. on a hill!

If somebody even slightly bumps your truck, or it slips out of gear for ANY other reason, bad things will happen. Seriously, I've seen it.

I use my e-brake and put the car into gear to make sure it doesn't roll. Never just done only one so can't really give any helpful input. I've never heard of the e-brake freezing. That's nuts. Probably cuz I live in SoCal :D

yes your truck can still roll while in gear if on a steep hill....always keep your foot on the brake and keep your clutch pushed to the floor then pull the parking brake then let off the footbrake first ( parking brake should keep the truck from moving ) and then let off the clutch ( keep it in first gear)..( make sure you turn the truck off before letting off the clutch..lol ) so that the weight of your truck is on the parking brake and not your transmission

well I'll try to use both now, and being summer my e-brake shouldn't freeze lol.

I've never really trusted the e-brake on these trucks though. When I went to test drive one I parked it and set the brake, and the guy at the dealer double checked it, we got out and 2 minutes later it rolled away on us. My truck has rolled once with the e-brake set, luckily I was still in it.

it should hold fine...if not have it adjusted....make sure you pull it all the way out or up depending on which kind you have...also leave it in gear too as a back up if the brake were to slip

Always use the parking brake! That's what it's there for! ;)

    Nothing yet, brand new!
Our trucks have rear drums which make for good parking brakes. But yes, always use it. Don't rely on the drivetrain to hold the truck still.

Ever bump start a vehicle? Your motor WILL/CAN turn over with the weight of the vehicle on a hill in gear with no parking brake set. You are asking for major accident damage if you don't use the e-brake.

Its possible the turning wheels are causing the engine to turn over. Try it in second gear and report back. I think it will roll even further.

Most important thing is "it is the parking break use that keep the rear brakes adjusted"!!!!! I use mine everytime and I have an auto in this current tacoma (manual previously) It is especially important to use it regularly in the northeast with the salt air and roads to keep everything working.

E-brake shouldnt freeze ever, considering its a cable not hydraulic.

Most of the time it's the brake shoes that freeze to the drums, not the cable itself.

And my 6spd always rolled a little when parked in gear on a slope, especially if the e-brake wasn't set hard enough.

Would the engine actually turn over without the key in the ignition? I wouldn't think so without the ignition being active. I do usually set the e-brake when on a hill and parked, it's just the other day was the first time I noticed the truck started to move before I set the brake, and the incline wasn't steep either. I was just hoping it wasn't a sign that my clutch was wearing out. I've never had a vehicle roll away on me.
