    Im debating between a 92 4runner that I could fix up thats going for 2800
    or
    I was looking at a 89 jeep cherokee for 3000 thats already fixed up

    Get a trail beater to whoop on and build. Keep the next tacoma or FJC or even something sporty and fuel efficient super clean and use as a DD.

    The two trail rigs/cash cars you mentioned above... I have had both. lol
    had an 89 cherokee XJ in HS and that thing was a tank. always fixing something stupid...but parts are 20-60 bucks for the most part haha

    the 92 4runner...more than likely has the 3.slow. notorious for blowing head gaskets and is an under powered truck.torsion bars and IFS had minimal flex though. I had fun with mine, but I couldn't help but to ALWAYS wanting a little more oomph when I pressed the gas pedal. (especially coming from the dual VVTI FJC) haha

    They both have their pros and cons...
    XJ would make a better trail rig ith minimal $$ into it, 2nd gen 4runner is still fun, but if I were in your shoes.... def trail rig/beater and a super clean tacoma to DD.
