Is the railings over the deck or in line with the edge of the deck? Hard to tell from the pic

 

Lol. I'm working on a union built subdivision home....this is more scary then the 100 yo farm house.

 

What's US code for openings in a deck railing ?

Canadian code is 4" sphere

 

same for work but that will end next week.

Gonna get it a friend then I'll figure something out.

We're down to 3 7/8" now. 4" openings will not pass inspection

 

Or whatever the metric conversion is

 

I have only used metric for trade school lol

 

100mm is. 3.9 inches , I'm going with that

 

Our cbc needs to be updated to an actual conversion rather then the estimated conversion they use now.

In line with edge. That was the way the deck was built with a 4x4 on both sides of the stringers. Odd, I know. Going to make it a pain to put the caps on.

If I did that I would fail inspection.... What's the spacing from the deck to the bottom of the lower railing?

 

3". There is a brace you can't see in the railing actually making the gap less. Rail height is 36". spindles are 4" center to center.

 

For us, inline railings (like yours) have to be over the decking. To do it the way your deck is we would have to do a cantilevered railing system (pickets extended down and fastened to the rim joists).

I like the look of that product. Used a fair bit of trex decking and I am not a fan of the fake pattern embossed on it. Not to mention it moulds in our climate and gets covered in lil black dots
